CASA's Racial Equity Task Force Up and Running
Established earlier this year, the Racial Equity Task Force meets regularly to discuss social justice issues which directly impact our community and organization. The goal of the task force is for CASAs to be the strongest allies possible for youth as they navigate the complicated child welfare and court system. The task force's mission is to ensure that the training and supervision CASAs receive helps us all recognize systemic, as well as individual, bias and endeavor to overcome it in our work. The task force is dedicated to developing short-term and long-term goals to help our organization become more inclusive and diverse.
Empowering CASA Youth with Personalized Scrapbooks
Sara Bly is empowering CASA youth, one scrapbook at a time. Wanting to be involved with the CASA organization, Sara found a creative way to help inspire and lift up the foster youth we help through personalized scrapbooks. Working with the CASA volunteers to gather personalized information such as a child's favorite color, movie, book, etc., she then compiles it into one book for the CASA child. "It's important for [foster youth] to feel like they fit in and feel comfortable," said Sara about what she hopes her books will do for the youth, "[the books] whole purpose is to promote self-esteem, self-worth, [so that they can] be proud of themselves no matter their hardships in life."

She has received funding from Heritage Makers to create 6 of these books for Oregon's foster youth this year. Her books offer a creative way to honor youth and highlight their strengths, roots, and dreams. Fred Meyer Jewelers is proud to partner with CASA and we are about making a difference for children in the Multnomah, Washington, and Columbia Counties foster care system,” said John Berglund, CASA Board member and Fred Meyer Jewelers Group Vice President of Merchandising.
