St. Louis-based Centene announces that its subsidiary, Iowa Total Care, has been tentatively awarded a contract for Iowa's privately managed Medicaid program, bringing the total number of administrators in the state to three.

Pending regulatory approval, the contract is expected to commence on July 1, 2019.

Centene, one of the nation's largest health care providers, will replace AmeriHealth Caritas as a managed care provider. AmeriHealth decided to leave the state after losing hundreds of millions of dollars covering care for about 200,000 poor and disabled Iowans, reports the Des Moines Register.

Iowa Total Care will join private insurers Amerigroup of Iowa and United Healthcare of the River Valley in serving the more than 600,000 Medicaid members in the state.

"We are pleased to be selected for the IA Health Link Program," Centene CEO and Chairman Michael Neidorff said in a release. "We look forward to working with the state of Iowa to deliver on our mission of providing better health outcomes for Iowa residents at a lower cost to the state."

A Fortune 100 company, Centene is a diversified, multi-national health care company that provides a portfolio of services to government-sponsored and commercial health care programs, focusing on the under-insured and uninsured. It also provides healthcare services to groups and individuals delivered through commercial health plans and offers a range of health insurance solutions.

When planning first started for RUN CRANDIC, the region's first marathon race, organizers were hoping they would be able to raise $10,000 for the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City community school districts. Consider that goal shattered, news partner CBS2/FOX 28 reports.

Representatives from the Cedar Rapids Economic Alliance, the Corridor Business Journal, Corridor Running, Think Iowa City, and the University of Iowa Community Credit Union presented checks for $27,865 apiece to both districts on Monday after raising $55,370 through RUN CRANDIC.

"One of the things I'm especially excited about is, one, the size of the check - which is, of course, exciting," Cedar Rapids Community School District Superintendent Brad Buck said following a presentation at Jackson Elementary, "but this will go to our foundation. This will flow right into kids and additional opportunities for our students."

RUN CRANDIC had initially hoped for 1,300 participants in the inaugural event. More than 3,000 runners signed up to run the marathon, half marathon and 5K races.

Investigators are now ruling the deaths of a mother and son in Belle Plaine, who were hit by a train, a murder-suicide. The Iowa Department of Public Safety says Teresa Gerleman, 36, committed suicide and pulled her 8-year-old son into the path of the train, killing him as well. Authorities came to that conclusion after collecting evidence at Ms. Gerleman's home, speaking with Union Pacific Railroad employees and from watching video footage from Union Pacific. Officials say the video shows Ms. Gerleman waited near the tracks for a train to approach and pulled her son on the tracks with her at the last moment. Belle Plaine Police Department and Belle Plaine Ambulance responded to the scene on May 4. The railroad was shut down for several hours while investigators combed the scene.

About 800 Alliant Energy customers were without power Monday night, according to the company's website. The outage map showed homes and businesses from Collins Road NE to Blairs Ferry Road NE and Rockwell Drive NE to C Avenue NE were impacted. The outage was first reported at about 8:44 p.m. Crews working at the outage site restored service about 11 p.m.
