The Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust has committed a $45 million grant to the University of Iowa that will allow for the creation of a comprehensive and cross-disciplinary neuroscience center within the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.

The new Iowa Neuroscience Institute will conduct research to find the causes of, and preventions, treatments, and cures for the many diseases that affect the brain and nervous system.

In recognition of the gift, the UI has requested that the Iowa Board of Regents approve the permanent naming of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute at its Dec. 5 meeting. Approval of the official name ensures that no future individual or corporate name can be attached to the institute.

"The Carver Charitable Trust's unsurpassed and unwavering support for the University of Iowa over nearly 30 years has made an indelible impact on the UI Carver College of Medicine," UI President Bruce Harreld stated in a press release. "The Carver name is forever linked with significant scientific discoveries and advanced treatments to cure diseases and transform lives. This new grant furthers that legacy, benefitting Iowans and the world."

The $45 million grant will elevate the university's brain research center by creating a new interdisciplinary institute and bringing together top scholars from across the UI. Researchers -- including biologists, computer scientists, neuro-psychologists, engineers, fundamental chemists, biochemists, geneticists and more -- will tackle some of the toughest problems in the neurosciences. The grant will support the creation and maintenance of core neuroscience laboratories; Research Programs of Excellence awarded to institute members demonstrating outstanding research leadership; and five faculty chairs, four professorships and 10 junior-level investigators.

The Iowa Neuroscience Institute will be led by Ted Abel, who will join the UI faculty in January 2017 from the University of Pennsylvania, where he serves as the Brush Family Professor of Biology in the Penn School of Arts and Sciences and co-director of the Biological Basis of Behavior Program.

The Carver Charitable Trust and Roy and Lucille Carver are the largest donors to the UI, with their collective giving totaling more than $195 million. This gift from the Carver Charitable Trust also is the largest in the UI's For Iowa. Forever More. fundraising campaign, which started in 2008 and continues through this December. Following Board of Regents approval, the $45 million gift will be added to the campaign total, which is currently $1.85 billion.
Unity Point Health-St. Luke's Hospital has acquired 20 Miller Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids.
UnityPoint Health-St. Luke's Hospital acquired 20 Miller Ave., Cedar Rapids -- a half-acre site with a vacant 3,280-square-foot convenience store building on Nov. 15 for $350,000.

Although the idea of a UnityPoint Health Clinic at the site does not seem far-fetched, the hospital has not announced any plans for the site. Spokeswoman Sarah Corrizo said the site was acquired for future development, with no specific project or timeline on the horizon at this time.

The property was sold by Casey's Marketing as Casey's made plans to expand an existing Cedar Rapids store at 3625 Edgewood Road SW. Casey's has filed a preliminary site development plan to build a store and car wash totaling about 7,900 square feet on a three-acre site at 3625 Edgewood Road. The site currently houses a 4,896-square-foot store.
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is offering a free online workshop to help Iowans better understand their options when choosing health insurance. "Smart Choice: Health Insurance" will be offered online from 6-8 p.m. Nov. 30.

To register for this free online class, contact an ISU Extension and Outreach county office or register online by noon Nov. 30 at http://tinyurl.com/pvmceb7 .

ISU Extension and Outreach offers "Smart Choice: Health Insurance" to help individuals improve their understanding of health insurance terms and coverage, and learn how to use personal finance and health information to select a policy.

Open enrollment season is underway for many health insurance plans, said Joyce Lash, a human sciences specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach.

"One option is to simply re-enroll in the same plan you chose for 2016," Ms. Lash stated in a press release. "However, that can be a risky strategy. Insurance plans can change coverage terms from year to year, and consumer health-care needs can change, too. Instead, try to match your needs for the next 12 months to a policy that will provide adequate coverage at the most affordable cost."

Iowa's health care leaders and policymakers will examine the major changes now unfolding in the state's health care system at a daylong conference beginning at 8 a.m. Dec. 1 at the Holiday Inn Des Moines-Airport in Des Moines.

The University of Iowa, led by its Health Sciences Policy Council, is partnering with the Iowa Rural Health Association to lead the discussions during "Rebalancing Health Care in the Heartland" to address critical issues facing the state's health care system. Health care delivery across the nation and in Iowa is undergoing rapid and significant transformation.

This conference will bring together local and national providers and health policy experts to discuss the impact that the new alternative payment models, the expansion of telehealth and the Medicare Access & CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA) will have on a rural state like Iowa.

This event is open to the public. Registration and program information are available at:

Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, is donating Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to 12 area schools, churches and community organizations in December. The AEDs will be placed in readily-accessible locations at the schools and organizations, to be used in case of an emergency.

AEDs are portable devices that check heart rhythm and treat sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).  When needed, an AED can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm.

The AED donation program at Mercy is designed to equip local non-profits demonstrating financial need with the life-saving devices.  The non-profits must also exhibit a need for AED coverage for their facility and participate in an application process.

Mercy is partnering with ThinkSafe, of Cedar Rapids, to make the AEDs available for donation.
According to the American Heart Association, SCA kills more people every year than strokes, AIDS and breast cancer.  A key to fighting SCA is defibrillation (use of an AED) within a very short period of time from the onset of SCA.
