SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

CC&E announces Dr. John White as our new associate dean for research. With extensive experience as a researcher, reviewer, teacher & mentor, he will help lead strategic initiatives that will continue our legacy of outstanding coastal research & education.

In the annals of scientific history, aquatic viruses have only begun to be studied recently. Scientists did not discover that viruses were present in very high abundances in the ocean until 1989, and they are as mysterious as they are extreme. Jennifer R. Brum, assistant professor in the Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences, is studying the ecological and biogeochemical impacts of aquatic viruses that infect bacteria in one of the most extraordinary environments on Earth—hydrothermal vents.

Rachel Croy is a first-generation college student and an accomplished undergraduate senior double-majoring in Coastal Environmental Science (CES) and French. She is one of only six CC&E students ever to be accepted into a graduate program at Harvard. There, she will pursue a Master of Science in environmental health, with a particular focus on how pollution in the environment impacts human health.
When Stephen Meyers chose LSU College of the Coast & Environment's (CC&E) undergraduate Coastal Environmental Science program, he did not need to apply anywhere else. Stephen Meyers is a second-generation LSU graduate. His mother, father, brother, and sister all graduated from LSU. And, his father, Keith Meyers, received his master's in environmental sciences from CC&E in 1986.

“When I realized how many LSU graduates are employed right here in Baton Rouge, it was an easy decision for me,” Meyers said.

In its inception in 2008, the CES program had only five students enrolled. Now, 10 years later, it has enrolled nearly 150 students, making it one of the fastest-growing undergraduate programs at LSU. In Spring 2018, CES conferred the largest-ever number of undergraduate degrees in one graduation with 22 graduates.
