5th Annual Fun Run!!!
Friday, May 4th
We are so excited for this special event, and hope you can come out and cheer your child on! The schedule is below, and please note the fun run will begin one hour later this year due to the opening ceremony in the gym at 8:10 am.

9:00-9:50             Grade 3
10:00-10:50         Grades K and 1
11:00-11:50         Grades 5 and 6
1:00-1:50             Grades 2 and 4
2:00-2:50             Grades 7 and 8

Thanks to CCSD, we have a beautiful new gym, and the proceeds will go toward furnishings for the gym and new administrative areas, as well as some classrooms. Proceeds will also be used for our ongoing technology needs.

CCA K-5 Masquerade Ball: April 27 th
The CCA K-5 Masquerade Ball will be on April 27 th  from 5:30 p.m. -7:30 p.m. 

Wear your favorite mask (nothing scary) or make one with our supplies at the ball.  Pizza and candy will be available for sale and popcorn and water will be free.

VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED
Calling all volunteers to teach/co-teach in a classroom
for Junior Achievement (JA) Day on Tuesday, May 1 st .  
Junior Achievement's mission is to "...inspire and prepare every students, no matter what their background, to reach their potential". JA programs "equip students withA the tools they need to find their own success in our competitive and challenging global workforce".  

JA will provide each volunteer with an age appropriate curriculum designed to provide hands-on activities. These activities teach students skills to help manage and control their finances. CCA is in need of two volunteers for each classroom. 

Kindergarten and First grade volunteers will be working with students until their lunchtime at 12:20 pm. Volunteers for all other grades are needed in the classrooms until the end of the school day at 3:00 pm.

7 th graders will be off campus for JA Day at Junior Achievement's Financial Park . We are in need of 7 volunteers for 7 th graders.
  
The training date for all JA volunteers is Monday April 23rd from 5-6 p.m. at CCA .

Volunteers will receive the curriculum and will be instructed on how to implement the curriculum in the classroom.

2018 CCA Board Election
There are three open positions
on the Board for the 2018 Election. 

The term for each Board position is three years. Please join us for Meet the Candidates Night Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at 5:00 pm in the library.  

• The Election will be held by electronic ballot.

Important Announcement from the Health Clinic
This is a reminder that all students going into the 6th grade next school year need a Tdap(Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) immunization. 
This is a required vaccine.

READ LIKE AN ANIMAL!!!
     CCA K-6 TH GRADE READING COMPETITION
April 23 rd thru May 17 th
Two teams, the Sly Foxes and the Wise Owls will compete in an all school reading competition to see which can earn the most Accelerated Reader points. Mr. Hargreaves and Dean Loomis will co-captain the parliament of Wise Owls while Mr. Cerny and Mrs. Nowak will co-captain the Skulk of Sly Foxes. (Yes! This is what groups of owls and foxes are called!)

The Rules
Teams must maintain an 85 percent or higher quiz average to receive full credit for all points that are earned. For example, if a team has an overall quiz average of less than 85 percent, then the total team points are multiplied by that average. A team with 1,000 points and an 80 percent quiz average will only receive 800 points of the 1,000 possible points.

Students who do not adequately help their team earn points are ineligible for prizes.
Students may only take tests in their designated reading range.
An entire class may not take a quiz on the same book during the challenge period (except kindergarten).
        Prizes will be awarded for every 750 AR team points earned.

750 Points – Stuffed Animal Day Bring your favorite stuffed animal to school. Giant stuffed animals are not allowed.The award date will be announce.
1,500 Points – Crazy Hair Day Fix your hair to look like an animal or just go crazy with it. The award date will be announced.
2,250 Points – Crazy Socks and Shoes Day Students may wear any hard-soled shoes with a back, as long as they are not open toed, flip-flops, Heelies, cleats or have a heel higher than 2 inches. The award date will be announced.
3,000 Points – Pajama Day Students may not wear tank tops, spaghetti straps, tight yoga pants or anything inappropriately revealing. Use the school dress code as a guideline. All students must wear hard-soled shoes. The award date will be May 18 th .
The Ultimate Prize – The team with the most competition points will earn animal ball caps and wristbands that may be worn all day on May 18 th . The victors will also enjoy root beer floats during lunch recess.
GO WILD ABOUT BOOKS!
Accelerated Reader 100 Point Club

Students who meet the following requirements by the end of the year, become members of the 100 Point Club and are awarded a customized medal engraved with their name.

Yearly Point Requirements by Grade
Kindergarten - 45 AR points
First Grade - 65 AR points
Second Grade - 90 AR points
Third through Sixth Grades - 100 AR points
Seventh and Eighth Grades - 125 AR points

Seventh and Eighth Grade students may take AR quizzes to earn points, even though they no longer have an Accelerated Reader requirement.

The points and a cumulative quiz average of 85 percent must be earned
by Friday, May 11 th .

Former CCA alumni Emma Hope, holds the record, earning a whopping 2,004 points within one year. She was only in the fifth grade, at the time, and has held the record since 2009. That is long time! Is it time for a new record holder?
Volunteer Opportunities in the CCA Library

Volunteers are needed to help with this year’s reading competition. Opportunities include purchasing and delivering ice cream cups, root beer, spoons and disposable glasses. Servers are also needed to hand out root beer and ice cream to students during recess on May 18 th from 10:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Please let Mrs. Larson know if you are interested by emailing her at alarson@cherrycreekacademy.org . Spelling Bee Results
Congratulations to 8 th grader Prakash K. who complete in National Geographic's State Geography Bee April 6 th , and took Third Place in the entire state! 
Attention CCA Alumni!
The CCA Foundation is once again offering a $1,000 scholarship for current seniors in high school. Alumni who attended CCA through 8 th  grade (and are presently seniors) are eligible for this scholarship and may use it toward their college of choice. Information will soon be mailed to all potential candidates and the applications are due back no later than April 18th.  

If you have a student who is an alumni or know of former CCA families who have moved since graduating from CCA, please contact   Caitlin Sullivan , Registrar, so that we may update our database and ensure that they receive information on how to apply.

We look forward to reviewing applications and announcing our 2018 scholarship recipient!  
Colorado Math League Results
The results for 6th, 7th and 8th graders who competed in the Colorado Math League are out! This was our first time competing in this particular competition and our students performed exceptionally well. 
Here are the results:
Grade 6
  • CCA placed 9th overall.
Grade 7
  • Nate S. placed in the top 35 students in Colorado. He came in the 27th position.
  • CCA placed 11th overall.
Grade 8
  • Prakash K. placed in the top 37 students in Colorado and secured the 18th position.
  • CCA placed 8th over all.
Congratulations to all our competitors.
We are very proud of each and every one of them!
Teacher/Staff Feature
Jen Doré is originally from Louisiana, but she has called Colorado home for the past 15 years. Her first position as an educator was a middle school teacher in southern California. Over the past six years, she has enjoyed numerous roles at CCA and is currently the ELS Specialist. 

Jen and her husband have been married for 18 years and have two children. When she is not cheering for one of her kids at a lacrosse game or fencing tournament, she enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time outdoors. 
Johanna Fitt grew up just outside of NYC across the river in northern NJ. She comes from a large Italian family. Everyone was loud and fun and musical. Her favorite thing to do as a teen was to go into Manhattan on a Saturday and wait in line in Times Square for half price tickets and go to a musical.

Johanna eventually moved to Denver, met her husband and adopted their 2 daughters from China. 

She continues to make music and has sung in Carnegie Hall, recorded a Christmas CD to raise money for charity and sung in the chorus of 6 operas. Other hobbies are crafts, cooking and baking and recently fell in love with her stand up paddle board.
Eric Reinke joined the CCA team last fall - now working as a reading and recess aide for Kindergarten through 4 th grades. 

In addition, he is a consultant for the Cooperative Development Center of the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union. He is working on a project that will purchase an existing home care business, convert it into a worker-owned cooperative, and then purchase other home care businesses - creating a home care co-op that grows iteratively.

He also preps students for the ACT, SAT, and LSAT tests, and tutors students with long-term math needs.

A few announcements from Champions.
Champions will not offer afternoon childcare
on April 11 th.
Summer Registration
Champions is offering half-off of Summer registration fees, for all families who attend at least one day of Spring Break. Many families have already registered, however we need about 5 more children per day to be registered AND scheduled to be sure of running the program. 

If you are planning to attend, please go online to register and schedule , and let Jasper know as soon as possible.

Summer registration is now open!

We look forward to having several field trips, and a summer curriculum filled with circus science, spy school, superhero puzzles, natural studies, and more!

You can register online in your parent account. Summer program will be held here at CCA, and hours will be 8a-5p Monday- Friday. We will be closed July 4 th . We will be hosting other schools here as well, and we anticipate some of these other schools will have a high enrollment.

If you plan to use Champions these days,

Family Game Night
Champions will be hosting a family game night on Friday, April 13 th , from 4:30 p.m. -6:30 p.m. (This has been changed from a previously published date of April 6 th , please note!)

The kids have voted on a few of their favorite games that they want to play with you, including Families VS. Kids Dodgeball, Apples to Apples, an Uno tournament, and a Scavenger Hunt, designed by kids, solved by families!

The kids are excited to play with you and are working hard to prepare for your visit! We know many of you are still working in the evenings, but we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible. 

Kids who are attending with a responsible adult may attend without charge, for the time that adult is here.  

Champions will provide snacks, and families are welcome to byo-dinner!

WEEKLY UPDATE:

  • Monday 4/9: Pre-punch/touch-up activities in the basement, in-fill CMU at elevator openings, apply seal coat to gym floor.

  • Tuesday 4/10: pre-punch/touch-up activities in the basement and first floor, complete ceiling grid in elevator lobby (basement level), begin painting/striping gym floor, complete ceiling tiles on first floor, prep concrete floors in storage areas for sealing.

  • Wednesday 4/11: pre-punch/touch-up activities in basement and first, continue painting/striping on gym floor, complete paint on stair 5 elevator walls, begin stair 5 stair treads, install casework in work room 170 and cut in sinks (innovation & work room). New domestic water chlorination to occur 4pm – 8:00 pm. Finish final grading of site, prep for sidewalks.Water to building to be shut off at 4:00 PM to begin chlorination of new piping. This will not include chlorinating existing piping, but due to valve locations and safety concerns, we will need to shut down the whole system. This will be completed and flushed completely the evening of 4/11.

  • Thursday 4/12: pre-punch/touch-up activities in basement and first, continue striping/painting of gym floor, complete stair 5 treads, place concrete for sidewalks. Seal concrete floors in storage rooms. Begin installing chain link fencing around south and west window wells.

  • Friday 4/13: Complete pre-punch activities. Remove forms from sidewalks. Begin final seal coats of gym floor. Begin final cleaning of new space. Continue chain link fencing around south and west window wells. Begin mobilizing landscapers.

  • Saturday 4/14: Complete final cleaning. Complete chain link fencing.
TRAFFIC/SAFETY:

JHL has planned ahead to minimize the impact to normal school operations, including traffic. Morning drop off and afternoon pick up will not change. JHL has scheduled all deliveries and truck/equipment traffic outside of our drop off and pick up times.

JHL created a safety video for our website, highlighting the efforts JHL takes to separate students from the construction as well as their thorough background checks for their employees, and other important efforts being taken to ensure a safe construction site. 

JHL, DCS, RTA architects, and CCA leadership meet and discuss new construction tasks that involve safety matters at weekly Owner, Architect, Constructor meetings to ensure the safest site possible.

TOURS:

We are working with JHL Constructors and DCS, CCA's Owner's Rep, to schedule monthly tours for anyone interested in walking the project to hear and see first hand the progress being made. These tours will be held immediately following our regularly scheduled monthly PTO meetings. The next tour date will be 04/20 immediately following the PTO meeting.  Remember to wear close-toed shoes to participate!
