Integrating
Knowledge

Smith College's varied opportunities for community engagement allow students to extend their learning beyond the classroom. There are numerous ways for students in any discipline to be involved in the surrounding communities, and many students take advantage of these chances to engage with communities outside of Smith. Kara Auclair, a senior from Connecticut, has found community work to be a significant learning experience during her time at Smith.

Hands-on work connects theory and practice

The Holyoke Community College Adult Learning Center (HCC ALC) is a free, intensive, evening High School Equivalency Preparation program that offers basic literacy, adult basic education, and High School Equivalency preparation classes along with a host of companion services including technology training, career development, field trips to local colleges for classes and demonstrations and academic counseling. The ALC is located in the Picknelly Adult and Family Education Center in downtown Holyoke.

Smith's partnership with the ALC means that Tom Gralinski, the Science Center Outreach coordinator arranges four to five visits to Smith labs.  Students get hands-on experience in  microscopy, cells structures, rock and mineral explorations, plant structures and engineering design and  an introduction to electricity. Smith student volunteers lead activities with guidance and support from the Science Outreach office and faculty and staff such as the Center for Microscopy

Working with Others: Celebrating Campus-Community Partnerships

The work done at the Center for Community Collaboration would be absolutely impossible without the committed efforts and support of our many community partners. Throughout the year we work with numerous community organizations, professors, educators, religious leaders, and local individuals in order to provide opportunities for Smith students and meet the needs of surrounding communities. On May 8th we will host a large reception to celebrate these valuable relationships and reflect upon the work we do together.
