K- 8 DRESS CODE

Students should always come to school in clothing that is neat, clean, modest, and does not detract from the educational activities of the school.

No list can adequately cover the range of acceptable dress given the influence of personal taste or current fashion, and so the school asks both parents and students to cooperate with the spirit – not just the printed words – of the dress code. To provide some guidelines, please note the following restrictions:
  • For safety reasons, shoes need to be appropriate for the day’s activities.
  • Sheer clothing is not permitted.
  • No hats or hoods are to be worn in school during the school day, unless authorized for specific events.

The dress code guidelines for all students is as follows:

1. Shorts/Skirts/Dress length:
  • Must be 3” above the knee or longer
  • Biker (spandex) shorts are not appropriate for school
2. Shirts/Dresses:
  • Basketball jerseys, crop, halter, strapless, see-through mesh, backless, racerback or spaghetti tops are not permitted
  • Shirts must be long enough to be tucked in: no exposed midriff
  • Sleeveless tops with at least a 2-inch strap are permitted
3. Pants/Leggings:
  • Leggings are allowed under appropriate length shorts, skirts, dresses and tunic style shirts.
  • All pants and jeans must be clean with no holes or tears. No pajama-type pants may be worn to school.
  • All pants must be able to stay up without assistance, covering all under clothing.
4. Shoes:
  • Shoes need to be appropriate for each day’s activities  No slippers!
  • No beach type flip flops or “Heelies”
  • No backless shoes/sandals when playing on the play structure

There are occasions when a more formal dress is appropriate, usually for a field trip or when special guests are expected at the school. Therefore, three levels of dress have been defined, and the faculty will notify students when dress other than “school clothes” is expected.

Dress Code for Physical Education Class :
  • Students in grades 4-8 must change for PE classes. Students with inappropriate dress may not be allowed to participate in the class for that day.
  • All students must have clean athletic shoes, shorts, and a t-shirt (that was not worn to school that day).
  • Socks must be worn with the athletic shoes.
  • Girls may wear running shorts, running shorts with the connected spandex liner, running tights, leggings, and yoga pants. They may not wear volleyball spandex shorts.
  • Girls may wear tank tops, including racer back tank tops. They may not wear spaghetti straps or camisoles.
  • Any sleeveless jersey must be worn over a sleeved shirt.

Dress Code for Middle School Choreography and Dance
  • Students in grades 5-8 may change for choreography and dance class.
  • Boys may wear shorts, sports pants, or sweatpants and a t-shirt.
  • Girls may wear leggings, yoga pants, running tights, or sweatpants and a t-shirt or tank top, including racer back tank tops. They may not wear spaghetti straps or camisoles.
