LOS ANGELES - Studio City, Van Nuys and Valley Village are all slated to participate in tonight's National Night Out, an annual event held across the United States to raise crime and drug prevention awareness while strengthening ties between the community, local groups, police and officials.

The 30th annual event is set for Tuesday, Aug. 6 and celebrations will include block parties, cookouts, visits from local police and sheriff departments, parades, exhibits, flashlight walks, contests and youth programs.

But the overall goal is to bring communities together. In 2012, nearly 38 million people in 15,704 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide participated.

More than 15,300 communities are expected to take part in National Night Out 2013 and Councilmember Krekorian will continue his tradition of visiting the events slated for CD2. Community Works Toward

A Cleaner North Hollywood

Ready to clean | Photo/Sarah Ramsawack North Hollywood NE NC
NORTH HOLLYWOOD - Volunteers gathered early Saturday morning to scrub the intersection of Lankershim Boulevard and Sherman Way, pick up more than three dozen bags of trash and help beautify the community.

Councilmember Paul Krekorian joined the North Hollywood North East Neighborhood Council, more than 50 from Volunteers of America as well a local contingent of police, fire and other residents.

The clean up began bright and early at 8 a.m., when a team from Sun Valley Graffiti Busters removed weeds and trimmed trees along the medians to enable a more efficient cleanup.

Roving teams then picked up more than 50 bags of trash and swept the area, which had fallen prey to overgrown weeds and unintended debris. In all, more than seventy stakeholders cleaned up the sidewalks and parkways of Sherman Way from west of Lankershim to the 170 freeway - a major step in the neighborhood council's Cleaner North Hollywood Campaign.

"These extraordinary partnerships between the city and the neighborhood help realize our collective vision of revitalizing this area as we continue to improve the quality of life in the San Fernando Valley," Councilmember Paul Krekorian said.

Is there an area in your neighborhood in need of a clean up? Let us know by emailing District Director Jackie Keene.

North Hollywood Alleys Get A Fresh Look, L.A. River Says Thank You

Photos/BSS

NORTH HOLLYWOOD -The Bureau of Street Services recently completed the reconstruction of four alleyways in North Hollywood as part of the North Hollywood Alley Retrofit Project.

Four adjacent alleys, located west of Vineland Avenue, between Oxnard Street and Hatteras Street, were reconstructed to ensure more water would be captured. To do that, a three foot depression called a swale was placed in the middle to capture the alley's storm water runoff and filter it through the permeable pavers into the sandy soils below.

A new catch basin was constructed at the southeast corner of the alley to capture additional storm water runoff from the street that will flow into a PVC drain pipe to the center for added storm water capture.

According to the BSS, only 10% of rainfall in urbanized areas percolates into the ground. The result is that the vast majority of storm water runoff and the resulting trash, debris, and other pollutants from the drainage area flow into the storm drain system and into the Los Angeles River. This project is aimed at limiting harmful runoff into the L.A. River and beyond, officials said.

Is there an area in your neighborhood in need of care? Let us know by calling (818) 755-7676 or 3-1-1 for the city services directory. You can also email usTweet us, or send us a message on Facebook.

Tour of District Businesses Continues

VAN NUYS - Councilmember Krekorian continued his tour of businesses in the second district last week with a stop at local favorite, Al's Chicken.
With owner Camille Mathis | Photo/CD2

The Van Nuys-based restaurant is a staple at local community events, serving up rotisserie chicken and a variety of dishes to the community.

During the tour, Councilmember Krekorian had a chance to learn about the restaurant's history, talk about the state of our local economy and chat with owner Camille Mathis, an active member of the Valley Glen community and supporter of the nonprofit National Alliance on Mental Illness.

For her work with the nonprofit organization, the Councilmember gave Camille an official city of Los Angeles certificate that read, in part: "By lending your support to NAMI, you've helped those most in need and sent a powerful message that the greatest pillar of community success is neighbors and families looking after each other. You are an inspiration to many and I wish you only the best of luck in the years ahead."

Councilmember Krekorian fields a question from a Junior States of America participant. JSA spent most the day at City Hall and, in addition to the Councilman, heard from officials at the LAPD, editors at the LA Times and others about the role media plays in our civic society. During his talk with the high school-aged crowd, Councilmember Krekorian said each had an opportunity to make a difference. "Each one of you can take the opportunity to change this country," he said, "if you decide to do it." | Photo/CD2
