Krekorian's Corner:
 Bring Your Own Bag

Dear Friend:

Starting July 1, the plastic bag ban for smaller markets and stores will go into effect across Los Angeles. That means you'll need to BYOB (bring your own bag).

In January, the ban went into effect for big box stores and large grocers. Under the next phase, small retail stores, like 7-Eleven, mini-marts, liquor stores and small grocers located in the city, will no longer offer free single-use plastic carryout bags to consumers.

The average lifespan use of a plastic bag is 12 minutes. More than 200,000 plastic bags find their way into our landfills every hour. It takes more than 1,000 years to break down a single plastic bag. These statistics tell us that bringing our own bags to the market is the responsible way to go.

We can all do our part to protect the environment and move away from a culture of waste by making small changes in our lives. As California's caretakers, it's our job to recycle and reuse whenever we can.

For more information, residents and business are encouraged to call 311 or visit www.lacitybag.com.

Very truly yours,

Councilmember Paul Krekorian

City Leaders Call for Rideshare Regulations

LOS ANGELES - Last week, Councilmembers Krekorian, Koretz and Cedilllo introduced a motion calling on state lawmakers to impose stricter regulations on rideshare companies.

The motion urges support for Assembly Bill 612 sponsored by Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian, which would require rideshare operators, such as Uber, Lyft, and Sidecar to comply with the same regulations that taxi companies adhere to - carrying insurance for drivers at all times and conducting regulated background checks on participating drivers.

"We need to make rideshare companies safe for passengers and fair for consumers," said Councilmember Krekorian.

Upward Mobility: NoHo Arts Welcomes
Bike and Pedestrian Improvements

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - This Saturday, Councilmember Krekorian will unveil two new community improvements in a push for greater safety and neighborhood mobility.

On June 21 at 2 p.m., in front of the Laemmle NoHo 7 Theatre, there will be ribbon cuttings for a new bike corral on Lankershim and an updated crosswalk at Magnolia Bouldevard and Blakeslee Avenue. The crosswalk will be outfitted with new Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacons, which will increase pedestrian and driver safety.

Because of Councilmember Krekorian's motion, the City Council approved the installation of the flashing beacons earlier this year.

"Los Angeles is making great strides as a walkable city, and these safety improvements in our neighborhoods are at the core of making that happen," Councilmember Krekorian said. "I am focused on making our streets safer for pedestrians and bicyclists."
