Krekorian's Corner:
Making it Safer and Easier
to Walk and Bike in Noho

Dear Friend:

The secret is out: NoHo is a happening place. It isn't just up and coming anymore. We have arrived. Within just a few blocks, you can ride your bike for fun, walk to great shops and restaurants, and hop on the Metro to get to work or anywhere else you want to go.

After the NoHo Arts District joined Council District 2 in 2012, I made it a priority to make NoHo even better and safer for pedestrians, bicyclists and commuters. There are currently a number of projects moving forward and some that are complete.

One example is the improvement on Lankershim in front of the Laemmle NoHo 7. When theatre owner and bike enthusiast Greg Laemmle told me that he wanted a bike corral in front of his theatre, I worked with him to get the project approved and completed. LADOT employees installed the new bike corral last week, just in time to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Laemmle Theatres.

In the coming weeks, the intersection of Magnolia Boulevard and Blakeslee Avenue will also get a complete overhaul that will make it safer for everyone, especially those who walk around the neighborhood.

With the help of the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, Magnolia and Blakeslee is being outfitted with Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacons. RRFBs are flashing lights that complement warning signs at intersections that don't have traffic signals or at mid-block crosswalks. They are proven to enhance motorist compliance when coupled with a crosswalk. I know they will do wonders for safety at Magnolia and Blakeslee, which is something community members want and deserve.

I believe we can all agree that NoHo is getting better and more mobile every day. What is happening here is a new form of "upward mobility"--one that benefits everyone.

Very truly yours,

Councilmember Paul Krekorian

Studio City Welcomes New Riverwalk

LOS ANGELES - On Saturday, Councilmember Paul Krekorian, along with Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian and the Village Gardeners, marked the opening of Studio City's North Valleyheart Riverwalk Project.

The Riverwalk, a $3.5 million project funded by the LA County in addition and a beautification grant from the office of Councilmember Krekorian, is a half-mile stretch of greenway along the LA River. The pedestrian and bike friendly multi-use river trail from Coldwater Canyon to Fulton Avenue features a concrete and stone entry way at Ethel Avenue and stone seat walls shaded by California native plants along the path.

This urban oasis is also home to a new mural by local artist Kevin Carman, called "The Mighty Steelhead." The stone mosaic mural of a steelhead trout is composed of more than 40,000 stones collected by Carman for the public art piece.

The Riverwalk is open to the public. Visit our Flickr page for pictures from the event.

Little has changed for the look of Fire Station No. 60 in North Hollywood.

According to the library's archive, the station was built as part of a $4,600,000 expansion program of the Los Angeles Fire department and replaced the old Fire Station No. 60 location at 11222 Weddington Street in North Hollywood.
