Krekorian's Corner:
Have a Fun and Safe July 4th
fireworks-summer.jpg

Dear Friend:

The Fourth of July is a time to remember and celebrate our nation's independence. It is also a time for colorful parades, delicious barbecues, fun moments with friends and family, and of course, fireworks.

To celebrate America's 238th birthday this Friday, there are many opportunities to enjoy public fireworks displays in Council District 2 and beyond. I hope you take advantage of them. But please remember: leave the fireworks to the professionals.

All fireworks are illegal in the City of Los Angeles. Every year, thousands of injuries are reported as a result of the use of dangerous, illegal fireworks. Burns are the most common firework-related injury. In addition, fireworks can also cause blindness, third degree burns, permanent scarring and life-threatening home and motor vehicle fires. With the drought conditions currently facing Southern California, errant fireworks can spark brush fires. Please don't use them.

I, along with the LAFD and the LAPD, urge you to celebrate this Independence Day safely in our great Valley.

For more information about firework safety, visit www.safejuly4th.org.

Very truly yours,

Councilmember Paul Krekorian

Councilmember Krekorian Tackles Foreclosure Blight

LOS ANGELES - In a special joint hearing of the Housing and Budget and Finance Committees last week, city officials voted to correct the flaws in the existing Foreclosure Registry Program.

The program, first enacted in 2010, is meant to protect residential neighborhoods by addressing blight caused by foreclosed homes sitting vacant. It requires banks to register their foreclosures with the city or face a fine. The committees took a key step toward strengthening the program and addressing the thousands of deteriorating properties that have become a hub of crime and drug activity.

The motion, which was co-presented by Councilmembers Krekorian and Cedillo earlier this month, will streamline the registration process for the bank-owned foreclosed properties and add a new fee to fund proactive building inspections. A recent audit by the City Controller found serious faults in the existing program, which has allowed foreclosed homes to sit vacant for months, even years without citation.

"We have an opportunity and an obligation to fix the Foreclosure Registry Program and move it forward to help Angelenos," Councilmember Krekorian said. "The motion that I co-presented with Councilmember Cedillo proposes common-sense changes that would help prevent blight from taking root in our communities as a result of foreclosures."

"There are still thousands of bank-owned, foreclosed homes across the city. If we just let them sit there without taking meaningful action, they become hubs for crime, drugs and other public safety concerns that impact everyone in the community. Implementing a proactive enforcement effort will encourage banks to be accountable for the properties they own."

The motion will come before the full City Council later this summer.

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - LAPD North Hollywood Community Police Station partnered with local non-profit A Chance for Children and Bookends to establish a Little Free Library in the NoHo Community Police Station lobby.

The library will function as an education and outreach tool to families in North Hollywood and build a sense of community, while promoting literacy and a love of books. LAPD Cadets and police officers will work with local schools to provide book-reading programs at the station.

Councilmember Krekorian donated 50 books to the North Hollywood station's Little Free Library. You can donate too. Drop off new or used books at the North Hollywood Community Police Station, located at 11640 Burbank Blvd., and help the station's Little Free Library grow.

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - The Dept. of Rec and Parks, in collaboration with the LAPD North Hollywood Community Police Station, the San Fernando Valley Coalition on Gangs and the office of Councilmember Krekorian, recently celebrated its annual Salute to Kids day.

The event provided a day of fun activities in the park with food, games, entertainment and resources. It allowed parents to build positive partnerships with the LAPD and other community members. This year, the Rotary Club donated 30 bicycles that were raffled to children for free, accompanied by free helmets donated by Kiwanis EIG.
