Krekorian's Corner:
National Night Out for Safer Communities
Dear Friend:

Join me on Aug. 5 to celebrate the 31st annual National Night Out.

Communities across Los Angeles will be gathering on Tuesday night to stand against crime and spotlight the committed partnerships of local groups, elected officials and the law enforcement officers who keep our neighborhoods safe.

For three decades, National Night Out has promoted crime prevention activities, police-community relationships and neighborhood camaraderie. It's a night when people come together to show that neighborhoods are organized and united against crime. In 2013, nearly 38 million people in 16,242 communities participated in National Night Out events across all 50 states.

I'll be going out Tuesday night with my family and you should too. Demonstrate your support for crime prevention and safer, stronger communities by participating in a National Night Out event near you. Here are a few happening in Council District 2:
  • Studio City - Pinz Bowling Center, 12655 Ventura Blvd., from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Valley Glen - Valley Glen Community Park, 6150 Atoll Ave., from 7 p.m. -10 p.m.
  • Valley Village - Valley Village Park, 5000 Westpark Dr., from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Very truly yours,

Councilmember Paul Krekorian

The Great Wall Gets a Bubble Bath

LOS ANGELES - The Great Wall of Los Angeles got a fresh look last week when volunteers, the Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC), and Councilmember Krekorian spent the afternoon washing the mural's walls. It was the Great Wall's annual "bubble bath."

Spanning over 2,700 feet in the Tujunga Wash of the San Fernando Valley and painted over five summers, the Great Wall of Los Angeles mural is a visual representation of the history of California's ethnic communities from prehistoric times to the 1950s.

"The Great Wall of Los Angeles is a cultural treasure for the San Fernando Valley and all of Los Angeles," said City Councilmember Krekorian. "As the longest mural in the world, it is also one of the most important, showcasing the incredible diversity that shaped our city and continues to make it great. I'm happy to partner with SPARC to clean and maintain the mural so that everyone can enjoy the rich, rewarding visual experience it provides."

Judith F. Baca, the mural's founder, conceived of the idea in 1974 when the Army Corps of Engineers gave her the task of beautifying a portion of the flood control channel. Through contributions from numerous government and private groups and individuals, the project launched in the summer of 1976.

Under Baca's direction, with support from a team of 80 youths, 10 artists and five historians, the first 1000 feet was painted. During the subsequent summers of 1978, 1980, 1981 and 1983, the mural makers added the additional panels of history, commemorating the contributions and struggles of California's ethnic peoples.

In 2011, with the help of Councilmember Krekorian and others, the mural underwent restoration, returning it to its original vibrant look. In 2013, SPARC received a $90,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to expand the mural and include history from the 1960s-1990s.

SPARC is now in the process of developing the 1960s segment of the mural. For more information about the Great Wall of Los Angeles and future expansion, visit sparcinla.org.
