Krekorian's Corner:
Citywide Sidewalk Repair Program

Dear Friend:

In early July, I introduced three motions outlining a comprehensive, citywide sidewalk repair program to
fix the city's failing sidewalks. Council President Herb Wesson Jr. and Councilmember Joe Buscaino joined me.

Ready for Repair

This is the first citywide plan that systematically addresses the challenges of an issue that has plagued Los Angeles for decades. We can't just implement band-aid solutions any longer.

My proposed Citywide Sidewalk Repair Program seeks to create solutions for private residences and commercial properties with funding options, including: a new 50/50 program, a sidewalk repair trust fund and revolving loan program for property owners. Additionally, the program will address the city's role in improving public sidewalks next to parks, municipal buildings, civic centers and other community facilities. [Read the motions here.]

What's Next

This year, the Mayor and City Council have appropriated $27 million for sidewalk repair, more than ever before. The city needs an effective program in order to prioritize repair needs and efficiently spend the funds.

On Monday, Aug. 18, at 1:30 p.m., we'll begin evaluating my proposal at a special joint hearing of the Public Works and Budget and Finance committees. The hearing will take place at City Hall and will also be televised on Channel 35 and available for streaming online, here

The time for meaningful action is now. We have an opportunity to take care of a backlog of deferred maintenance that has long impacted our neighborhoods.

With your support and input, my proposed plan will pave the way for better, safer sidewalks across the city.

Very truly yours,

Councilmember Paul Krekorian

LOS ANGELES - Councilmember Krekorian recognized USC senior Oscar De Los Santos in City Hall last week for his selection as a 2014 Harry S. Truman Scholar.

Each year, the highly competitive scholarship honors students for their academic success, leadership potential and commitment to public service. Oscar was 1 of 59 unique and outstanding recipients selected from a pool of more than 200 national finalists.

In his presentation to the City Council, Councilmember Krekorian--who was also a finalist for the prestigious award during his time at USC--applauded Oscar's academic and leadership success.
"Although this is Oscar's first time here visiting us in the Council chambers, I know it's not going to be his last," Krekorian said.

Oscar's mother and brother, both extremely proud of his accomplishment, attended the presentation. Afterward, Councilmember Krekorian gave everyone a tour of LA City Hall.

As part of receiving this scholarship, Oscar attended a one week leadership camp in Kansas with all 59 recipients. Of the experience he said, "The best thing about it is the people you meet there." He added, "It's a really great network of people and mentors."

Oscar hopes to continue in the field of public service by joining the Peace Corps after graduating from USC next year.

Open for Business as Trunk Line Work Continues
Trunk line construction along Magnolia Blvd. continues,
and businesses along the stretch are open. | Photo: CD2

VALLEY VILLAGE - In its second phase of the project, the LADWP continues work along Magnolia Blvd. to replace the city's century-old water main.

The City Trunk Line South - Unit 4 (CTLS-4) project is in the process of replacing an old and deteriorating trunk line that was built in 1914 and has a history of leaks and breaks. The new trunk line will improve capacity, reliability and flexibility in the water system. The current work zone is located on Magnolia Blvd., between Whitsett Ave. and Babcock Ave. Traffic has been reduced to one lane traveling east and west on Magnolia Blvd.

Though bulldozers, excavators, drills and orange cones line this stretch of Magnolia, local businesses in the construction area continue to operate during regular business hours. Please stop by and support these businesses when you can.

A recent water main rupture in Westwood, which spilled an estimated 20 millions gallons of water on to the streets and flooded the UCLA campus, brought further attention to the city's need for water infrastructure improvements.

Construction on Magnolia Blvd. is expected to continue through November. For updates on the project, click here to visit the LADWP website

LOS ANGELES - Communities across Los Angeles celebrated National Night Out last week, honoring the dedicated men and women of the LAPD.

The annual celebration highlights police-community partnerships that increase awareness and strengthen neighborhoods against crime and illegal activity.

For the 12th straight year, Los Angeles has seen the lowest number of crimes since the 1960s. So far this year, property crimes are down 7 percent, homicides are down almost 2 percent and gang-related crime decreased 13.1 percent citywide.

Councilmember Krekorian, who joined Studio City, Valley Village and Valley Glen for National Night Out events, thanked community partners and law enforcement for their continued service and for playing a key role in keeping our communities safe.

LOS ANGELES - Councilmember Krekorian led the City Council in honoring the community work of Comcast and NBCUniversal, especially their annual Comcast Cares Day.

Comcast Cares Day is the nation's largest single-day corporate volunteerism effort. Comcast and NBCUniversal created the day in 2001 to show their commitment to improving the quality of life in the communities where their customers and employees live and work.

In 2014, a record 95,000 volunteers contributed 570,000 hours to improve more than 820 parks, schools, beaches, senior centers and other vital community sites in 12 countries around the world.

In Studio City, with the help of more than 450 employee volunteers, Comcast and City Year transformed the halls of Rio Vista Elementary School, painting murals that celebrate and reflect the student body's multicultural diversity. Comcast also presented the school with a $15,000 grant to purchase classroom computers.

LOS ANGELES - LA welcomes its two newest department heads, Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas and Dept. of Transportation General Manager Seleta Reynolds.

On Aug. 8, the City Council confirmed Terrazas, who was sworn in by Mayor Garcetti later that afternoon. With 31 years of experience in the LA Fire Dept., Chief Terrazas is the first chief of Latino heritage to be appointed to the post.

"I look forward to working with Chief Terrazas to enhance Fire Services, get hundreds of new firefighters trained and out in the field, and achieve responsible budgets that will help the Dept. grow and provide more services," said Councilmember Krekorian at the Fire Chief's swearing in.

Seleta Reynolds hails from San Francisco's Municipal Transportation Agency, where she led the city's Livable Street initiative. Bringing more than 16 years of experience to LA's transportation scene, Reynolds is committed to applying her passion and expertise to revitalizing key community corridors across our city, including our San Fernando Valley.
