Krekorian's Corner:
Join Me for Lunch on Thursday

Dear Friend:

Our Valley has so many incredible places to eat. I make sure to take my family out as much as possible to sample the fine foods served by local restaurants across Council District 2.

Local restaurants not only serve great food, but also serve an important community need--they give us gathering places and help forge a shared neighborhood culture and identity. Their owners demonstrate the kind of work ethic that makes our neighborhoods great.

That's why I am happy to announce a new effort to spotlight local restaurants, called "Lunch with Paul."

Starting this Thursday, I'll host a monthly lunchtime gathering open to all Council District 2 residents at a local restaurant. It's an opportunity to support an important local business, while we chat about what's happening in the neighborhood.

Please join me for the first Lunch with Paul at Sofi Woodman Restaurant, a new Valley Glen establishment that uses fresh ingredients to serve modern cuisine. Click here for a lunch menu.

Thursday, Sept. 11

12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Sofi Woodman Restaurant

6002 Woodman Ave., Valley Glen

Contact Geoff Yazzetta to RSVP: (818) 755-7676 or [email protected].

I look forward to seeing you Thursday.

Very truly yours,

Comment Period Extended on Weddington Proposal

STUDIO CITY - Studio City residents are well aware that there is a new proposal to develop a 200-unit condominium project for seniors on the tennis courts at the Weddington Golf & Tennis facility. The developer has completed a draft environmental analysis and the public is currently commenting on it.

In August, Councilmember Krekorian requested a 15-day extension to the public comment period, which the Planning Dept. approved this week. The new
deadline for public comment on the project is Sept. 30, at 4 p.m. In his request, Councilmember Krekorian stressed the importance of ensuring "a fully fair and transparent process."

"I understand the neighbors' concerns about this proposal and believe they should be given great consideration when evaluating it," said Councilmember Krekorian. "The proposed redevelopment of the Weddington Golf & Tennis site has been an issue of intense debate in Studio City for years. Now that a specific proposal is being studied, everyone deserves a chance to weigh in on its potential impact to the neighborhood."

He continued, "That's why I pushed to extend the public comment period on the proposal's draft environmental analysis. It's an extensive document and the community needs to be included in the discussion."

Credit Where It's Due: LA Sees Rating Bump

LOS ANGELES - Last week, Standard & Poor's credit rating agency bumped up LA's general bonds outlook from a ranking of "stable" to "positive." That may seem like information only experts in finance care about, but it is information that impacts us all.

Just as credit bureaus, like Equifax and Experian, give you reports to rate your personal creditworthiness, all cities get rated too. And our city's credit rating just went up because Los Angeles is on the right track.

The credit rating agency's revision of the city's outlook is recognition of the city's fiscal discipline and prudent budgeting over the past few years. LA has worked to get its financial house in order, while continuing to deliver essential community services.

"The positive outlook reflects our view of the city's improved economic metrics, including unemployment, which is below 10% and continues to fall, and the city's improving financial position," said Standard & Poor's credit analyst Jen Hansen.

As chair of the Budget and Finance Committee, Councilmember Krekorian has led the effort to produce a balanced budget by championing fiscally responsible measures, while also reflecting residents' service priorities. In the past few years, LA's projected deficit has shrunk by a whopping $800 million. Getting there wasn't an easy task--there were many sacrifices and tough reforms along the way.

Now, the city is well on its way to eliminating its structural deficit altogether, with a projected surplus coming in just four years.

This year's city budget took a step in that direction by boosting the city's rainy day fund to the highest level it has ever been. The City Council also prioritized increasing emergency services and allocating more money toward sidewalk repair, neighborhood beatification and senior services.

"I'm thrilled that financial experts are recognizing all of our hard work to get the city's finances on track. I expect that we'll make even more gains next year and be able to go even further toward restoring and expanding neighborhood services," said Councilmember Krekorian.

The event will commemorate the lives of those who were lost on that terrible day, including a tribute to the bravery of first responders who risk their own safety and lives to save others. All community members are invited to attend.

During the 1958 election year, this North Hollywood space served as the field office for the No on Prop. 18 campaign. Pictured in the front of the office are Ray Greenfield, Labor Coordinator, 42nd Assembly District; June Sherwood, Area Director, No on 18 Campaign; Fay Greenfield, Headquarters Coordinator and Organizational Chairman; and Vern Liley, President, Glenwood Democratic Club.

Proposition 18, also known as the "right-to-work" law, was the major issue in the gubernatorial race of 1958 between Democratic candidate Edmund G. (Pat) Brown and Republican candidate Sen. William Knowland. Los Angeles County, with 41% of the state's registered voters, was a key area in this campaign. The space now belongs to local business Gabe's Upholstering.
