Krekorian's Corner:
A Local Incentive to Help Our Vets

Dear Friend:

At a recent summit on veterans, First Lady Michelle Obama challenged the City of Los Angeles to end veterans' homelessness by 2015--we accepted her challenge.

One of the best ways to combat homelessness is to create more good jobs for our veterans. It's been a citywide priority since at least 2011, when Los Angeles established the Office of Veterans Affairs to centralize city resources, enable access to local and regional services, and serve as a one-stop information shop.

Our city has made important strides, but there is much more work to do to assist local veterans. Of the roughly 110,000 vets in the city today, at least 28 percent are disabled and 15 percent are unemployed.

That's why I'm partnering with Councilmember Bernard Parks, District 8, to enhance the city's assistance to our veterans. This week, I supported his motion to create a pilot program that would give local businesses a tax rebate if they hire honorably discharged veterans and employ them for an entire year. The pilot Veteran Business Tax Rebate Program is a targeted incentive modeled after the federal Work Opportunity Tax Credit. Read the motion here.

Under the program, businesses would receive $1,000 per hired veteran and $1,500 for hiring a disabled veteran. The maximum one-time rebate would be capped at $20,000 per business.

The Veteran Business Tax Rebate Program is precisely the kind of business incentive that's good for our city. It serves people in need, while stimulating economic growth in a fiscally responsible way. Businesses will be rewarded for doing the right thing, and jobs will be created for disabled veterans and those who have honorably served our country.

As the City Council's Budget and Finance Committee chair, I look forward to discussing the benefits of this program with my colleagues very soon. This program is something we should implement in Los Angeles right away.

Very truly yours,

Councilmember Paul Krekorian

VALLEY GLEN - Sofi Woodman restaurant was abuzz last week as community members sat down for "Lunch with Paul" in Valley Glen.

Watch the "Lunch with Paul" video here.

From gyros and spanakopita to pizzas and burgers, the family-owned restaurant served up a diverse menu of Greek and American flavors to the 30 patrons who joined Councilmember Krekorian for his inaugural lunchtime event. Community members also had the opportunity to share and receive neighborhood updates.

Every month, Councilmember Krekorian will host a lunchtime gathering to spotlight a new neighborhood restaurant in an effort to support local businesses and showcase the incredible cuisine the Valley has to offer.

NoHo Commemorates 9/11 Anniversary

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - Councilmember Krekorian joined members of the LA Fire Dept., Police Dept. and the community to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

As firefighters read the names of the 78 Californians who lost their lives on that tragic day, community members lit candles, recited poetry and offered prayers of solace at the 9/11 Memorial in North Hollywood Park. Since 2002, the memorial has been a gathering place to honor the victims and the heroism of the first responders who risked their lives to save others.

Councilmember Krekorian, who led last Thursday's ceremony, reflected on the importance of unity and resilience in the face of adversity.

"Whether you were in New York or right here in Los Angeles--Americans of all ethnic, religious and political backgrounds were shaken and transformed by the terrible events of that day. I am so proud to commemorate the strength, resilience and determination that have become our country's calling cards, and the sense of common purpose that emerged from ashes of ground zero."

New Phase of Construction Begins
on Studio City Trunk Line

LOS ANGELES - The LA Dept. of Water and Power's city trunk line replacement project will begin the next phase of construction on Coldwater Canyon Ave. next week.

Starting Monday, Sept. 22, LADWP will implement the next work zone on Coldwater Canyon between Moorpark and Landale streets. The ongoing project consists of the installation of 1.25 miles of a 60-inch diameter welded steel pipe to improve water quality in the Valley.

Construction work will occur Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. During work hours, one traffic lane will remain open in each direction, north and southbound on Coldwater Canyon and east and westbound on Moorpark St. Temporary tow-away and no parking zones will also be in place along the work zone to improve traffic and provide a adequate space for construction work.

Construction is scheduled to be completed by January 2015.

Living History
Looking Back at Los Angeles

In 1932, the patch of land pictured in the top photograph was a dairy farm owned by Phyllis and Elmer Ciocca from Van Nuys. It is now the site of Los Angeles Valley College, a 105-acre community college dedicated to providing high-quality educational courses and preparing its graduates for university or vocational work. The college was founded in 1949 and serves more than 20,000 students.
