Krekorian's Corner:
Making it Easier to Go Metro

Dear Friend:

Last week was a good one for Valley transportation.

First, the Metro Board of Directors adopted a project I proposed that will add more parking at the North Hollywood Red Line station. The very next day, I introduced a motion with Councilmember Bob Blumenfield to have the city work with Metro on important Orange Line upgrades. These are both important steps toward making public transit more accessible for Valley residents.

At the NoHo Red Line station, the lack of parking is a well-known problem. Right now, there are 951 spaces that are 95 percent full by 7 a.m. each day. That leaves hundreds of potential riders without a place to park, causing them to drive to work in heavy traffic instead. My program will add 200 new parking spaces at the station and will be completed by June 2015.

You've probably heard about my Metro motion to study short- and long-term upgrades to the Orange Line. As a result, we are now looking at many options that could reshape Valley transit, including converting the Orange Line to light rail. Getting there is a few years away, but there are plenty of improvements we can implement right now that would make the bus ride better and faster.

Since it first opened in 2005, the Orange Line has been an incredible success and a vital connector for 30,000 people a day in the San Fernando Valley. Councilmember Blumenfield and I took action to get city departments to coordinate with Metro on improvements that would bring real benefits to Valley commuters, including having drivers maintain a cruising speed of 35 to 45 mph in order to work within the signal system, removing a few seats on each bus to accommodate bicycles, developing a software program to signal drivers when to speed up or slow down as they approach signals, and extending the amount of time each day that the line runs in four minute service intervals. I encourage you to read our motion here: http://bit.ly/1EaMRYT

These are exciting times in the Valley. We are making decisions and forming policies that will greatly improve our public transit infrastructure and make getting around so much easier for the Valley's 1.8 million residents.

I'll keep you updated about any and all transportation projects on which I'm working. Please join me in moving Valley transit forward.

Very truly yours,

Councilmember Paul Krekorian

AIDS Walk Los Angeles Turns 30
30th Anniversary of AIDSWalk LA
Click the video above to watch the Council presentation for the 30th Anniversary of AIDSWalk LA.
LOS ANGELES - It's been 30 years since the world's first AIDS Walk took place on the streets of West Hollywood. On Oct. 8, the City Council joined Councilmembers Krekorian and Koretz in recognizing the trailblazing work of AIDS Walk Los Angeles and its founder, Craig Miller.

In 1985, Craig Miller organized the first AIDS Walk, with a crowd of 4,500 people, including Mayor Tom Bradley, and raising a then-unprecedented amount of $673,000 in urgently needed funds to benefit AIDS Project Los Angeles. Since that time, AIDS Walk LA has raised nearly $75 million with more than a half million participants, making it the world's largest AIDS fundraising event.

This Sunday, Oct. 12, will be the 30th annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles. The 10K route will begin and end in West Hollywood Park, located on 647 N. San Vicente Blvd., at 8:30 a.m. Councilmember Krekorian will be there and you should be there too.

LOS ANGELES - In honor of Latino Heritage Month, City Hall recognized the work of "Latinas in the Arts." Councilmember Krekorian celebrated the artistry of Andrea Dopaso as Council District 2's honoree.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Andrea found her love of painting and design at the age of six. She pursued advanced painting and drawing under the guidance of master painter Anselmo Piccolo before graduating from the University of Buenos Aires. Andrea's passion for art and design led her to move to Los Angeles in 1990, where she expanded her career as a concept illustrator and set designer in our local film industry.

Andrea's blend of painting and drawing combined with her love of architecture has led her to create the imaginary worlds of many feature films and television series, including Life of Pi, Angels and Demons, Star Trek, House of Cards, Coraline, SpongeBob and more. She currently works as a senior illustrator for the Art Directors Guild.

"Andrea and the other honorees truly represent the creativity, talent and diversity that's right at home in Los Angeles. It's important that we continue to maintain our city as a center for the arts," Krekorian said.

In 1915, the intersection of Magnolia and Lankershim Boulevards was the location of Lankershim Bakery and T. W. Herron's Meat Market and Grocery. A century later, it's a bustling intersection in the heart of the NoHo Arts District.
