State of Public Safety in the Valley

VAN NUYS - LAPD officials and city leaders gathered last week to discuss the state of public safety in the San Fernando Valley.

Councilmember Krekorian, who attended the town hall, conveyed the importance of community partnerships with the police in continuing to keep crime at historically safe levels in the San Fernando Valley.

"Right now, as we stand here today, this is the safest the city's been in my lifetime," L.A. City Councilmember Paul Krekorian said.

Krekorian reiterated that by working together, city leaders can work to ensure public safety remains a priority.

"We're going to keep at it and keep driving crime down until we feel the bad days of '80s and '90s are a distant, distant memory," he said.

STUDIO CITY - The LADWP began another phase of construction on Saturday, as upgrades to the city's water distribution infrastructure continue.

The City Trunk Line Unit 5 project's next stage of construction to install a new 60-inch steel pipeline along Coldwater Canyon Avenue, between Ventura Boulevard and Moorpark Street, will reduce traffic to one lane going northbound and one lane southbound on Coldwater Canyon Avenue and east and west on Moorpark Street. The lane closures will remain in effect through June 2014. Construction will take place Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

According to the LADWP, the City Trunk Line South Unit 5 project consists of a 6,950-foot (1.3 miles), 60-inch diameter steel pipe along Coldwater Canyon Boulevard and Moorpark Street. The project, which began in 2011, is now at 49% completion and expected to wrap up in January 2016. The LADWP's ongoing water infrastructure upgrades are aimed to improve reliability, flexibility and capacity in the water distribution system.

Guide to the Medical Marijuana Storefront Ban
City_Hall

LOS ANGELES - After voters approved Proposition D last year, they sent a message that the growth of medical marijuana dispensaries throughout Los Angeles should be controlled. Since then, the City Attorney's office has been busy enforcing the city's ban on new dispensaries. They also created a handy information guide to answer common questions and concerns to clarify Proposition D means to Angelenos and the progress of enforcement. Those questions include:

  • How will the City enforce Proposition D?
  • What are the penalties for violating Proposition D?
  • How do I determine that the location of my Medical Marijuana Business complies with the requirements of Proposition D?

According to Proposition D, new medical marijuana businesses are prohibited from opening as the city put a lid on dispensaries after the City Council's 2007 moratorium went into place. Currently, the city has filed 70 criminal cases against dispensaries that do not comply with the law's provisions.

If you would like to file a complaint regarding a dispensary, contact LAPD in the area where the business is located with its name and address. You can also e-mail the City Attorney, [email protected].

Living History
A Modern Look Back at Our San Fernando Valley
The historic Southern Pacific Lankershim/North Hollywood train depot through the years. | Top photo from Pacific Electric; bottom photos from Metro

Our journey through the Valley's history brings us to our next stop - the Historic Southern Pacific Lankershim/North Hollywood train depot, one of the oldest unmodified railroad structures in Southern California.

In 1893, the train depot opened on the corner of Lankershim and Chandler Boulevard, fueling the urbanization and growth of North Hollywood and the surrounding area as crucial stop for the Southern Pacific Railroad. At the turn of the century, it was a major stop in the Pacific Electric Railroad's light rail system for the Valley before the transit system's decline and closure in 1952.

In the decades following, the train depot also served as home to a builder's supply company in North Hollywood before the MTA acquired the deteriorated property in 1990.

Today, the train depot is in the midst of a $3.6 million restoration slated for completion in the coming year. The project is funded by Metro using $2.5 million in Prop. C half-cent sales tax dollars and $1.1 million from the city of Los Angeles. The first phase of the work has already been completed - that included the removal of contaminated soils, roofing and lead-based paint throughout the structure, while repainting it with the original, vibrant Pacific Electric yellow paint colors.
