Council Approves City Budget
|
| LA City Councilmembers approved the 2014-2015 budget. | Photo: CD2 |
Over the past month, the Budget and Finance Committee that I chair conducted more than 40 hours of budget hearings, heard from 44 City departments, took public comment and made substantial improvements to the budget.
On May 21, the City Council discussed, debated and voted to approve the $8.1 billion City budget.
I'm proud of the work my colleagues and I have done to balance the budget. We are on track to restore services to the levels our constituents deserve and to eliminate the structural deficit. But we're still a long way from the finish line.
Our city has sacrificed over the past six years, and these sacrifices have put Los Angeles on better fiscal footing. We were able to lower the deficit by more than $800 million since 2010. At the same time, we established the largest reserve fund the city has had in decades. This is responsible budgeting that will protect us for years to come.
The 2014-2015 budget includes funding for:
- 2,400 miles of LA street repairs;
- filling 350,000 potholes;
- $1 million for graffiti abatement;
- $1.9 million to for park programs and maintenance citywide;
- $2.1 million to maintain medians and enhance neighborhoods;
- $5 million to clean up streets full of blight and bulky items;
- Restored library hours;
- Economic development in our communities;
- $20 million to fix LA sidewalks; and
- $22 million over last year's budget to rebuild the Fire Department with new equipment, systems and more firefighters.

As the economy continues its recovery, I look forward to doing even more to restore services across the city.
Very truly yours,
Councilmember Paul Krekorian

City Will Hold Donation Drive to Rescue the Mission
|

LOS ANGELES - A citywide effort is underway to collect donations for the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission.
This Thursday, May 29, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the office of Councilmember Krekorian is leading a collection drive at City Hall, asking city employees to to help get the shelter and the Mission's food pantry and thrift stores back on their feet. Volunteers will be collecting donations at City Hall's south lawn, located at 200 N. Main St., Los Angeles 90012. The Mission needs these items: new or gently-worn clothing and shoes; new or used blankets, bedding and towels; toiletries; baby items; small appliances; canned and dry food items. Recently, the LA Dodgers invited Dodger fans to donate to the Mission during the "Rescue the Mission Dodger Donation Drive-Thru." The event drew carloads of donations from fans, staff members and even players and their families. Dodger players Al "The Bull" Ferrara, Billy Ashley, Wes Parker, Dennis Powell, Matt Luke and Tim Leary were on hand to greet donors throughout the day. Dodger personnel also pitched in with their own donations and promotional items for the Mission, filling to the brim an 8 x 15 foot container donated by Mobile Mini for the event. "All of the Valley Councilmembers, as well as the business community and caring individuals across the Valley, have already been tremendously generous in providing emergency help, but we still have a long way to go," Councilmember Krekorian said. "We hope that every city employee and individual will donate, in whatever way they can, to provide urgently needed help to the families the Mission serves."
If you can't make it to City Hall on Thursday, cash donations can be made online at rescuethemission.org. Fire stations in the San Fernando Valley will accept in-kind donations of items that are still in critical need. For more information about the City Hall collection drive, contact (213) 473-7002.
