CHI's Homeownership Team has been very busy in 2018. By the end of June, our team already helped more people than in all of 2017!

First-time home buyer orientations, eHome America online education, home buyer classes and workshops have reached 1,290 individuals through Suffolk, Nassau and Westchester Counties. Through CHI down payment and rehabilitation grant assistance, 24 families have purchased their first homes. In addition, CHI held a Spanish-speaking orientation which was well attended with three lenders present, a first for CHI.

Foreclosure prevention counseling has helped 94 clients secure 22 loan modifications or other remedies to remain in their homes. CHI hosted a foreclosure prevention expo where three clients got on-the-spot modifications and another client who had three liens on one property received modifications for all three - the first time CHI has seen a modification acceptance like that!

Andrea Haughton, Director of Homeownership, indicated the rise in numbers is attributed to better use of technology, greater social media engagement, a new "text reminder" sent to registrants of orientations, strengthened relationships with lenders, and solid participation from staff. In June, CHI celebrated National Homeownership Month with numerous events that engaged over 300 people. This year marks 21 years since CHI started providing homebuyer counseling and down payment assistance. It has administered $11 million to 750 first-time homebuyers.
