The Power of Health Information
The 68th Annual CHIA Convention & Exhibit
Message from CHIA President Deborah Collier, RHIA

Don't miss out! Another great CHIA Convention & Exhibit is planned for Saturday, June 10 - Wednesday, 14, 2017. Pre-convention tutorials are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, and will include presentations on: exam preparation for RHIT/RHIA, CDIP, CHPS, CCS and CCA credentials; revenue cycle integrity; data analytics; complex ICD-10-PCS coding; and the first CHIA Student Academy.

Members are invited to participate in the CHIA House of Delegates meeting on Sunday at 1:00 - 5:00 pm. At this annual business meeting delegates, representing HIM professionals throughout California, discuss issues and advise the CHIA Board on matters of importance to the CHIA membership and health information community at large.

The Power of Health Information will be further revealed in concurrent and general sessions that will empower you to create, manage, and use health information for all roles in HIM and health care settings. Of course, there will be time for recognition awards of CHIA members, networking, vendor exhibits, and celebration at the CHIA Celebration Party where attendees will ignite the HIM superhero within.

On behalf of the CHIA Board of Directors, we look forward to seeing you there!

Texas Health System Settles Potential HIPAA Disclosure Violations
U.S. Department of Health & Human Services; May 10, 2017

Memorial Hermann Health System (MHHS) has agreed to pay $2.4 million to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and adopt a comprehensive corrective action plan to settle potential violations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule. MHHS is a not-for-profit health system located in Southeast Texas, comprised of 16 hospitals and specialty services in the Greater Houston area.

The HHS Office for Civil Rights (OCR) initiated a compliance review of MHHS based on multiple media reports suggesting that MHHS disclosed a patient's protected health information (PHI) without an authorization. In September 2015, a patient at one of MHHS's clinics presented an allegedly fraudulent identification card to office staff. The staff immediately alerted appropriate authorities of the incident, and the patient was arrested. Read full report.
