Updated Medicare Part D Opioid Drug Mapping Tool Unveiled
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services; November 29, 2017

Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released an updated version of the Medicare opioid prescribing mapping tool. This tool is an interactive, web-based resource that visually presents geographic comparisons of Medicare Part D opioid prescribing rates. The tool includes the addition of extended-release opioid prescribing rates and county-level hot spots and outliers, which may identify areas that warrant attention.

The mapping tool offers local communities greater transparency into opioid prescribing in the Medicare Part D program. Communities can use this resource to understand how this critical issue affects their area, examine regional variation, and make informed decisions about how to allocate resources. The underlying data that feeds this tool is also used by CMS to monitor and manage high risk use of opioids in the Part D program.

HHS Names Patient Matching Algorithm Challenge Winners
U.S. Department of Health & Human Services; November 21, 2017

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) today announced the winners of the Patient Matching Algorithm Challenge.

ONC selected the winning submissions from over 140 competing teams and almost 7,000 submissions using an ONC-provided dataset. “Patient matching” in health IT describes the techniques used to identify and match the data about patients held by one healthcare provider with the data about the same patients held either within the same system or by another system (or many other systems). The inability to successfully match patients to any and all of their data records can impede interoperability, resulting in patient safety risks and decreased provider efficiency.
