This week we have been celebrating the life and dream of Sr. Dorothy Stang, SNDdeN '49. Today, February 12th, marks the tenth anniversary of her martyrdom, which we commemorated with an all-school prayer service this morning, and through a variety of activities throughout the week. (See story.)

Next Thursday, Feb. 19th, we especially invite CJ parents to join us for the event: Living Out the Lessons of Sister Dorothy. It is a public showing of "The Student, The Nun & The Amazon," followed by a reflection given by Sr. Dorothy's close friend, Sr. Joan Krimm, SNDdeN '48. The event will end with a reception with resources available describing ways to carry forward Sr. Dorothy's dream. These ideas are reflected in her solidarity with the poor, her deep love and care for the Earth, and her desire for a more just world.

A variety of artwork will also be on display. Students worked in sodalities to consider how they could live out the dream of Sr. Dorothy. They wrote their ideas on leaves, which are now part of Sr. Dorothy's tree in the cafeteria. Sunflowers, a mural, an icon, and biographical panels of her life are also located throughout the school.

Living out the Lessons of Sister Dorothy is part of our
Partners in Mission, which enables parents to share in the historic mission of our school. It is also a result of the St. Remy Initiative through the University of Dayton. This program provides members of the CJ community with professional development opportunities, resulting in mission-strengthening events such as Living out the Lessons of Sister Dorothy.

As a school community we are honored to be able to call Sr. Dorothy our alum, sister and friend. As a Partner in Mission, please join us on February 19th in prayer and fellowship to live out Sr. Dorothy's legacy and dream of making known God's goodness to the world!

SENIOR CAPSTONE

Seniors are currently in Phase Three of the Senior Justice Capstone Project. During the third quarter they will design and implement a project which is informed by the research they conducted on their chosen issue. Many groups will be implementing their projects in the next couple of weeks.

Seniors are encouraged to use the days off in February to work on their projects. The project may be an action they take in order to make an impact or a final product created from the research. Actions may include:

  • contacting an existing organization connected to their issue and assist them in making an impact,
  • sharing their research with a targeted audience such as a church, other school or class at CJ; or
  • planning an event at a place where their issue is most prevalent.

A product could be an original piece of art, composition in writing or music, a website or any other type of media productions.

The project should be completed by the end of third quarter, March 13. Seniors will be sharing their projects at the Stang Symposium at CJ on April 30th at 7:00 PM.

School Delay and Closing Policy

School delays and closings are communicated through news sources, the school website, social media, and the One Call Now telephone messaging system.

If your child's public school district is delayed or closed and CJ is not, you may follow your public school district's determination, and your child will not be considered tardy or absent. However, parents must still call the Office of Student Services (461-3740 x465) to report that the child is not coming to school. Students must work with their teachers to help cover missed work.  More >
