We picked up an unusual piece of racing history earlier this week. It is a double page advertisement from the August 8, 1950 issue of the Illustrated Speedway News looking for both entrants and spectators for the first Southern 500 stock car race at to be held at Darlington on Labor Day, a few weeks later.
This was the first race on the first super-speedway purpose built for stock car racing in the US. The advert is yellowed with slight tears but in very good condition considering its age. Matted and framed in a gold wood moulding. A very unique item for those of us who appreciate the early history of stock car racing.
