Congratulations to All BOE Candidates

Your local school board is a microcosm of our national representative democracy and it's unique because it's an organization with the most direct impact in any community.  Thus, the impact of school boards upon the future well-being of our larger society can not be understated or underestimated.

Unprecedented events surrounded this past Tuesday's school board elections. Many brave, new candidates stepped up to do their civic duty, and to become involved in the democratic process by running for Trustee.  Many of these newcomers were met with a political behemoth determined to maintain the status quo for its beneficiaries.

An overwhelming 99% of school board budgets were approved -- demonstrating that New York State residents are united in their commitment to the fiscal security of their schools, and committed to investing in a quality education for their children.

We need to focus on what Unites us all while working to improve the school system so that it functions to benefit the individual child and to foster potential through academic excellence.

WEEK IN REVIEW

  • NYS SOE Extended - Last Sunday Governor Hochul once again took the liberty of extending the State of Emergency until June 14th, 2022.
  • NYC Parents Press Mayor Adams for Meeting - 200 NYC Parents petitioned Mayor Adams for a meeting with the Mayor and Ashwin Vasan, the NYC Health Commissioner about unmasking their toddlers.  'We write this letter because our hundreds of phone calls and emails, and our direct requests for meetings, have gone unanswered,' the parents wrote.  The boiling point for parents comes more than a month after Adams was set to lift the mandate but instead kept it in place despite 2 State judges striking down the restriction.  Meanwhile Mayor Adams is considering a Presidential run.
  • NSBA Admits It Took Sides Against Parents - the National School Boards Association released an independent report on Friday concluding that the group was in close touch with the Biden administration in the weeks before it asked President Biden for federal law enforcement to counter “domestic terrorism” at school board meetings.  The report states that the group was not acting at the White House’s behest.  But it was consulting with, and pressing, the administration.
  • NYSED is Expanding its Authority Over Catholic and Private Schools - new regulations have been proposed that will give oversight of private and Catholic schools, that receive state aid, to local school districts (LSA's).  The LSA's will determine if the programs offered by nonpublic schools are "substantially equivalent" to those offered in public schools.  In January, at the request of Catholic and private school's leadership -- Governor Hochul tripled nonpublic school funding for health, safety, and security projects (from $15 million to $45 million) and allowed nonpublic schools, for the first time, to use the funds to support critical maintenance and repairs of school facilities.  Governor Hochul also increased support for Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) instruction in nonpublic schools  from $40 million to $55 million.  As with any government subsidy -- this funding comes with strings attached, and unintended consequences.

State's Response Due Tomorrow:

Chad J. LaVeglia, Esq. continues to defend against the State's Appeal of his landmark win that struck down the 'Mask Mandate' in the State's Supreme Court.  The State must file its response tomorrow.
