Healthy Corner Store Efforts Picking up in Chicagoland

As part of a multi-year effort to increase the number of places where the public can make positive health and nutrition choices, the Cook County Department of Public Health has partnered with CLOCC to develop a network of Healthy Corner Stores within the Healthy Hotspot community.

In recent months, six corner stores have come online as part of the program. Locations now include Blue Island, Chicago Heights, Ford Heights, Hazel Crest and Riverdale. Healthy HotSpot Corner Stores make nutritious foods and beverages available to more people, including residents of underserved communities. These stores stock food items including vegetables, fresh fruits and low-fat dairy. Healthy Hotspot shelves and baskets are used to increase the visibility of the nutritious offerings.

Healthy Corner Store development is called out as a food access strategy in CLOCC's Blueprint for Accelerating Progress in Childhood Obesity Prevention in Chicago. In March, more than three dozen public health professionals attended CLOCC's workshop on Healthy Corner Store development. This past Tuesday, April 11, CLOCC and UIC students were on hand at New Way Market in Ford
Heights to facilitate a tasting event which highlighted some of the healthy foods available (below). As future events are planned, they will be posted on the calendar page at CLOCC.net.

Current locations include:
  • Herman's Foods & Deli, 20 W. 138th, Riverdale
  • New Way Foods, 1307 E. Lincoln Hwy, Ford Heights
  • Hidalgo Meat Market, 2801 Broadway St., Blue Island
  • Dixie Market, 2014 W. 170th St., Hazel Crest
  • Dona's Finer Foods, 12824 Mozart St., Blue Island
  • La Michoacana, 1148 S. Halsted St., Chicago Heights
