Benefits, Challenges for Healthy Corner Stores in the News
Local Tasting Events Scheduled for July
South Suburban Cook County continues to see an increase in local convenience stores offering healthy food and beverage options, with a dozen stores now participating in the Healthy Corner Store Initiative. Funded by Partnerships to Improve Community Health (PICH), the Healthy Corner Store campaign is coordinated by the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) and facilitated by CLOCC in South Suburban Cook County. The campaign provides assistance to stores in transitioning to a healthier inventory and in marketing and promoting their healthy options using CCDPH's "Healthy Hotspot" brand.
In February, 2016, the US Department of Agriculture
announced changes requiring stores which operate as part of the SNAP network to increase the number and variety of healthy food and beverage options.
On Friday, July 8, the Chicago Tribune highlighted how these changes are affecting retailers, including the challenges of influencing the buying habits of the local community.
