Register Today for a fiveSMART Training Opportunity on August 9

Research shows that a need for promoting healthy weight starts at life's earliest stages. Join the Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children on Tuesday, August 9 for a training and exploration of fiveS MART (TM), our new health message for prenatal and early-childhood (0-3yr). This event will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Komed Holman Health Center (NearNorth) in Chicago.

Designed to be a companion for CLOCC's 5-4-3-2-1 Go!(R) messagean advisory council of local experts developed fiveSMART as a tool for communicating the importance of sleep, meals, activity, role modeling, and things to avoid.

This training will be useful and relevant to those working with pregnant women or children aged 0-3, daycare providers, pediatricians, OB physicians, family practitioners and home visitors. Contact Elizabeth Strain with questions.

Efforts to Enhance Healthy Food Access for SNAP Recipients Escalate with New Petition to Governor's Office

Recently, CLOCC and multiple Consortium partners signed a letter urging Governor Rauner to ratify HB 6027, the Healthy Local Food Incentives Fund, which would establish a double-value coupon program for use by SNAP recipients at local famers' markets. That letter was delivered to the Governor last week by the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity (IAPO).

As of Monday, July 25,  no action has been undertaken by the Governor and an August 22nd deadline requires that he either sign or veto the measure. CLOCC and other supporters of the legislation are taking the additional step of encouraging organizations to circulate an open petition to their constituents asking the Governor to sign the bill.

The petition is available online and in PDF format. Those collecting paper petitions are urged to forward them to the Governor's office for delivery no later than August 22nd. Contact CLOCC or IAPO if you have questions about the petition.
