Policy Update:
Prevention and Pubic Health Fund

Earlier this month, the Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children (CLOCC) disseminated an action alert about federal funding cuts from the Prevention and Public Health Fund (Prevention Fund) in a House bill known as the CHAMPION Act. On Friday, November 3rd, the House voted for the cuts. However, there was strong opposition to the bill, much of which was generated by public health advocates like those in the CLOCC network. A roll call vote can be found here.

The final House bill included $6.35 billion in cuts to the Prevention Fund, as opposed to an earlier version of the bill that included $10.5  billion in cuts. The action now moves to the Senate, where there is hope that Senators who support the Prevention Fund will be able to negotiate a better agreement that includes bipartisan offsets.

The timing of Senate action on this matter is unclear but CLOCC will keep the network updated when the need for advocacy occurs.

Policy Update:
The Sweetened Beverage Tax Gap

Despite the repeal of the sweetened beverage tax, the negative health effects of sugary beverages remains a foremost concern to obesity prevention advocates in Cook County. This week, partner organizations and soda tax supporters are asking members of the health community to petition their County commissioner for investments in health and prevention.

It is more important than ever to make sure that the $200 million gap left by the repeal of the beverage tax doesn't further harm the health of Cook County residents by taking funds away from crucial health programs. Several commissioners who voted to repeal the tax urged more education on the health harms of sugary drinks. Use the button below to ask your commissioners to put action behind those words and invest in a public education campaign on the health harms of sugary drinks as part of the FY 18 budget.

Nominate an Individual or Organization for the 2017 CLOCC Founder's Award

Starting in 2011, CLOCC has annually recognized a  Chicago leader in the field of childhood obesity prevention. New for 2017, CLOCC is soliciting both individuals and organizations performing this valuable work to be nominees for this year's honor.

The Award is named for Katherine Kaufer Christoffel, MD, MPH, who founded the Consortium and has served as CLOCC's Medical and Research Director. The recipient of the honor will be recognized at our Quarterly Meeting on December 7.

A Founder's Award nominee can recognized for innovating, vision or for being a driver of change but, above all, the nominee should be striving to work across boundaries and have demonstrated passion and progress in the fight against childhood obesity by advancing the strategies outlined in CLOCC's blueprint.

The nomination period has been extended and will close at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 17th. Please note that the nominee should have been based in Chicago when performing the work recognized and must still be located in the Chicagoland area.

CHILDHOOD OBESITY IN THE NEWS
FUNDING & RECOGNITION OPPORTUNITIES
  • Bring outdoor play to your community by working with KaBOOM! and our corporate partners. A Build it with KaBOOM! grant provides the facilitation and support of an experienced Project Manager as community members embark on a 5-12 week planning process. After selection, all partners will join together for a community Design Day, inviting play experts (the kids, of course) to design their dream playspace. Your hard work and required weekly planning will result in a six-hour community day, where you will transform your community space to include a permanent play structure (equipment will be ordered by your Project Manager from Playworld Systems, Inc.) as well as site enhancements that will make your space 100% unique to your community. Site enhancements vary for each project due to location, budget and scope of project; please see our playground enhancement projects to brainstorm what projects may be part of your community-space vision.z

Submit an application by November 17 to get special consideration for 2018 Build it with KaBOOM! grants.
