ACTION ALERT

Healthy Local Foods Incentives Fund Gets New Life in Veto Session;
Act Today to Support Access to Healthy Foods for SNAP Recipients

A proposal to provide SNAP recipients with double-value incentives at local farmers' markets (HB 6027) was passed without opposition in May of 2016, but received an amendatory veto from Governor Rauner. Changes to the bill proposed by the Governor's office include reducing the amount dedicated to the fund, focusing the funds to incentives only (with no program operations) and turning the incentive offer into a pilot program.

While the State legislature failed to concur with the amendatory veto due to some technical errors, the bill was resurrected this week as House Amendment 1 to SB 1367. Now, it has just a short period of time to make it through both chambers of the Illinois legislature to pass and become law

Even with the Governor's changes, the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity (IAPO) and members of the SNAP advocacy group believe it is important to support this proposal and increase access to local fruits and vegetables. Please act TODAY to help ensure this measure becomes law.

  • If you represent an organization, please file a witness slip TODAY in support of SB 1367, House Amendment 1. You can do so by clicking here and marking "proponent" and "for record of appearance only" on the form. All forms must be submitted before the House Appropriations-Human Services committee meeting Tuesday, November 29 at 1:30 p.m.
  • You can ask your legislator to vote yes on the bill when it's heard in committee and voted on in the House and Senate this week. Do so through the action alert here.
