Wednesday, October 7, is International Walk to School Day

For Chicago, this Wednesday, October 7 is about more than the start of hockey season and the baseball playoffs. It also marks International Walk to School Day.

The day has strong Chicago roots, as the Partnership for a Walkable America sponsored the first National Walk Our Children to School Day in the Windy City back in 1997. It was modeled after the United Kingdom's walk to school events, and communities around the United States have been taking part in various Walk to School Day activities from that year forward.

Walk to School Day is now a global event, as more than 40 countries will promote walking and biking to school on Wednesday. The National Center for Safe Routes to Schools maintains a website with advice and resources for the year-round promotion of safe walking and biking, as well as taking part in International Walk to School Day.
