CMCI Certification News
January, 2017
Letter from the Chair

Fellow CCMs,

Happy New Year!
Jim Mitchell, CCM

Reflecting on the past year, 2016 brought CMCI and the CCM credential many accomplishments, including a lot of growth and many possibilities for the future.  CMCI set another record for the number of CCM applications received, collecting nearly 700 new CCM applications.  There are now roughly 3,500 CCMs located around the world - that's a 54% increase over the past five years!

CMCI completed its five year reaccreditation with ANSI, and dedicated a significant amount of resources to validating the Job Task Analysis for the CCM Exam Outline, ensuring it [the exam] accurately reflects the current duties of a Construction Manager. Additionally, an item writing summit was held at the National Conference in San Diego in October to create a new exam form.

The Board of Governors continually look for ways to simplify the recertification process for all CCMs, and that proved to be no different in 2016 as they expanded options for earning points through the new Recertification Point Provider program.  CCMs can now look for the CCM Recertification Point Provider  logo on other industry training offerings and know they are worth credit towards CCM renewal.  The program already has eight participants, including the University of Hartford's Construction Institute, the Lean Construction Institute, and BOMA, along with several more organizations that have expressed interest.

CMAA renewed its agreement with the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), which includes an endorsement of the CCM.  CMCI spent time exhibiting to create awareness of the CCM at SAME's JETC conference, the Southeastern Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (SASHTO), the National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL), and the Construction Industry Institute National Conference (CII).  The CCM Champion program was created to help build awareness, support, and influence for the CCM, specifically targeting new applicants, recertification, and specification for the CCM within project proposals.  As awareness of the CCM continues to grow, CMCI is seeing preferences for the CCM on more RFPs and RFQs. One example is in RFPs from an organization like the Chicago Housing Authority.

In 2017, CMCI hopes to see more awareness for the CCM from the digital badging program, exhibitions at SASHTO, CII, SAME, and the Public Works Conference, additional online and print advertising, as well as a concerted effort to have the CCM added as a preference to future RFPs and RFQs.  The Governors will also continue to work on generating more exam questions and releasing more forms of the CCM exam.

The Governors appreciate your continued support, and anticipate that 2017 will see the program continue to excel while building on the momentum set forth over the past few years!

Sincerely,

Jim Mitchell, CCM

CCM Champion Spotlight
Peter Caravousanos
Peter Caravousanos, CCM, RA, LEED AP is the Managing Architect for the New York City School Construction Authority.  He was one of the first volunteers to join the CCM Champion initiative when it began in early 2016. Since then, Peter has been a very active Champion, assisting nearly 20 CMs with their CCM applications, and providing regular ideas to improve the program. Peter knows the value of having CCMs leading projects, and constantly advocates for the use of CCMs within his organization:

"I believe this highly recognized professional designation empowers its CCMs to maintain an active involvement in their profession while keeping current with new approaches, technologies, and ongoing training.  Most importantly, I believe the Champion initiative can foster an agency-wide enthusiasm by empowering our fellow professionals to maintain an active role in their professional development, continued education, and growth as CMs.

Becoming a CCM can not only be rewarding from an individual accomplishment perspective, but it can be invaluable to the School Construction Authority, to the Architecture and Engineering industries, and CM collectively".

Peter has always played an active role in CMAA, previously participating as a Professional Construction Management Course instructor, and is currently serving on the CMCI Exam Review Committee.

If you are interested in becoming a CCM Champion, or would like to learn more, please contact CMCI.
Which Organizations Have the Most CCMs?
Some organizations are hesitant to push certification on their staff. Other organizations encourage certification. Then, there are the organizations that fully embrace the culture of certification . Certification itself is the principle standard of a professional practice, and for the Construction Management profession, the CCM is the gold standard.
