DIRECTOR'S NOTE - Hard to Believe it's May!
Dr. Nathalie HuntMay is a busy month.  We are finishing up state testing followed by MAP testing, which ends on May 31st.  Our testing schedule is listed in an article below as well as on our website and Facebook page. Every year we are finding new ways to incorporate the state mandated testing into our Montessori life.

This year the SCDE instituted Student Learning Objectives.  The goal of these objectives is to ensure that each student is meeting their annual growth projections in each content area, especially mathematics and reading/language arts.  We are using MAP tests as our measurement of annual growth.  On average, a student should gain 10 points of growth over the course of the year.

May is also a busy month for the PTO hosting our 2nd Annual Beach Blast at Huntington Beach State Park, on Sunday, May 15th, from 12 - 4 p.m.  Although the deadline has passed to participate in the Beach Blast games, it is never too late to come out and cheer on the teams.  I also want to bring to your attention the Beach Blast will also be our End-of-the-Year Picnic.  Each teacher is charged with recruiting donations of food and supplies for this event.  Please consider donating and joining us for a great day on the beach with your CMCS family.

Our 2nd Annual Eat, Play, Golf tournament is also coming up May 21st at The Founder's Club.  Remember that you do not need to be a golfer to come out and enjoy a fun filled day with us.  Sponsorship from the community has been consistently strong for this event.  I am especially excited for the food this year.  Thank you Carolina Tavern and the Heenan family for being our main tournament sponsor!

As we enter into the last four weeks of school let's work together to ensure that learning remains our priority.  We want to take full advantage of each day and this requires focus and effort.  Remember that together we can encourage each student to be on task, helpful, and kind.  Thank you for your support and I look forward to seeing you soon at the Beach Blast/End-of-the-Year Picnic and the golf tournament at the Founder's Club.

Kindly,
Dr. Hunt

Watch for Lice
A child was found to have lice in school recently. Please remember to keep an eye on your child's head - inspect it regularly and watch for itching. If your child gets lice please notify the school so we can take action to prevent other students from contracting it.

Lice do not like hair with products in it like hair spray and gel. Remind your child not to share jackets and hats and review these tips from the CDC for stopping the spread of lice.

A NOTE ABOUT LUNCHES

All accounts need to be paid up with the WMS cafeteria by May 13th. If you have an outstanding balance, please send it in asap.

Students who do not have money in their lunch accounts are unable to make "milk only" purchases. The system does not allow it.  Also, please encourage your student to keep track of their ID card.  Several ID cards have gone missing, which is causing issues in the lunch line.  The first ID card is free, replacements are $5 per ID card.
MMUN CORNER

Fridays MMUN Pizza Day on Fridays
CMCS students can enjoy pizza for lunch on Fridays for just $1 per slice. Healthy sides should be sent from home or purchased from the cafeteria.

News For Next Year, 2016-2017 School Year
UNIFORMS
The uniform policy will remain in place for all elementary grades (LE and UE). We are currently developing a middle school dress code policy, modeled from East Cooper Montessori Charter School's dress code policy.

STARTING AND ENDING TIMES

When we enter into our new building school will begin at  8 a.m.  and end at  3 p.m.

TRUANCY
The State Compulsory School Attendance Law requires all children between the ages of 5 - 17 to regularly attend school.  Students must attend at least 170 out of 180 regularly scheduled school days in order to be promoted to the next grade level.  Students who are unlawfully absent from school without reasonable cause will be referred to Family Court for judicial intervention.
Planned family vacations during the regular school year will be considered unexcused.  Work may still be assigned, however, the absence will still be unexcused.

Important:  Students who acquire more than 10 unexcused absences may be dropped from enrollment or not eligible for promotion.

Excused Absences
1. Illness
2. Death in family

Unexcused Absences
1. Suspension
2. Parental notes for student illnesses in excess of 10 days which cannot be substantiated by medical statements
3. Students absent from class as a result of extracurricular activities not previously approved
4. Routine appointments for medical, dental, or counseling services once a student has exceeded 10 absences per year
