The 7 Deadly Sins of Backup and Recovery
|
The Seven Deadly Sins of Backup and Recovery
This paper guides IT executives and system administrators in designing and implementing business backup and disaster recovery systems that enable every organization to rapidly recover entire business systems including business data, server OS, applications, and user data in case of a system failure or disaster, without experiencing undue planning and management pains. Your organization's servers, systems and data are the lifeblood of your business, and maintaining the continuity of these business systems is a complex, and full time endeavor. There are often hundreds of servers or sub-components that can fail, and many more ways that environmental and human factors can trigger such failures. It is impossible to predict in which manner the next failure might occur. But it can be surprisingly straightforward to implement appropriate protections that will limit the occurrences-and the impact-of the inevitable failures. This whitepaper outlines the most common missteps that organizations make in setting up disaster recovery or business system continuity plans. Smart IT executives will ensure that none of these mistakes is made in their organizations. While there can be no guarantee of perfect success, avoiding these common mistakes vastly improves the odds that an organization will successfully sidestep the worst of the possible ramifications from the inevitable failures that will occur in any IT environment. Any one of these mistakes has the potential to introduce fatal failures into a company's business system continuity plans. Let's explain each mistake in detail, and offer prescriptions for avoiding the traps they represent. - Backing Up Only The Data
- Allowing Backups To Go Untested
- Lack of Adequate Recovery Planning
- Not Planning For A Dissimilar Recovery Environment
- Not Having Offsite Copies
- Confusing Replication and Vaulting
- Adopting Inflexible Solutions

| Technology Spotlight: Virtualizing the Wireless Network |
Wireless Access Solutions: The Power of Virtualization Brought to Wireless
Today's enterprise communicates wirelessly. Users now carry multiple devices that need to connect to the enterprise Wi-Fi network from any point in the building and across the campus. These devices are mobile and are accessing applications that demand higher bandwidth. Wireless connectivity in the enterprise has moved from the access of convenience to the access of choice. Traditional enterprise wireless networks were designed before the explosion of Wi-Fi enabled devices and are now straining under the demand to support more devices, more access points, wider mobility, and greater bandwidth. A more scalable, cost-effective solution has emerged that leverages the power of virtualization to solve the scale challenges of the enterprise wireless network. ADTRAN has developed and introduced the next generation enterprise wireless solution: vWLAN that eliminates the scaling constraints imposed on the enterprise wireless network by eliminating the hardware controller and instead virtualizing the control and management of the network to run as software on a hypervisor. This fundamental shift brings extraordinary benefits. ScalabilityIn conventional controller-based networks, scale is tied to a single purpose device which is the hardware controller. Adding more users and more access points causes the enterprise to buy a bigger controller or add additional controllers. The introduction of 802.11n, which increases bandwidth demand and drives the need to buy larger controllers. vWLAN breaks this constant upgrade cycle. ReliabilityADTRAN's vWLAN brings wireless reliability to a whole new level. In vWLAN, the user data stream or data plane is separated from the control information about the data session. This separation of the control plane and data plane increases the reliability SecurityVirtualization not only unlocks cost effective scalability but it also enhances the security of enterprise wireless networks. vWLAN uses intelligent access points that operate a stateful firewall. Unwanted traffic is turned away at the access point before it enters the network and becomes a security problem.. Click here to learn more about ADTRAN BlueSocket vWLAN. | Did You Know? ShoreTel Tips & Tricks | |
Did You Know that ShoreTel v.12 offers a new integrated collaboration solution? This new solution is fully integrated into the ShoreTel core platform, breaking the complexity barrier that has prevented its massive adoption!
ShoreTel 12 integrates audio conferencing, web conferencing, and Instant Messaging into its core architecture. These new services, which can be centralized or distributed, run off the Service Appliance 100 (SA-100), a new appliance entirely managed through ShoreTel Director.
Brilliantly simple web conferencing Whether you are a PC or a Mac user, ShoreTel's brilliantly simple Web Conferencing enables you to share your desktop to collaborate on documents with your team. So you can, for example, conduct a sales presentation to prospective customers or simply use the interface to manage any audio conference. Participation for attendees is simplifi ed, as well: with a simple click on a web link - and no download - attendees can see the shared desktop within seconds.
You can also manage your documents in either your own personal library or in the public one. Using the pointer or whiteboarding session makes conferences even more efficient. And at the end of the meeting, sharing the results with participants is as easy as sending out the resulting document.
Secure, standards-based IM
The SA-100 embeds a XMPP server that can be used with ShoreTel Communicator's existing integrated Instant Messaging features: contact list; point-to-point and multi-point conversation; privacy; encryption. The SA-100 also introduces offline messaging, allowing for the delivery of any missed Instant Messages to a user upon re-login. Leveraging the new XMPP IM service, a Mac user can use his iChat software to communicate via IM with both Mac and Windows users.
One-click conference scheduling for Outlook Without IT supervision or assistance, users can schedule or create spontaneous conferencing, or even reservation-less conferences, using an intuitive Web interface. For Outlook users, scheduling a conference has never been simpler: simply pressing the "Conference" button in the Outlook ribbon automatically associates a ShoreTel Conference with the meeting, including all information required for the host and participants to join. When conference-time comes, the system changes participants' availability to "In Meeting" and plays a user-defined greeting.
Self-service scheduling Users can schedule or create spontaneous conferencing, or even reservation-less conferences, without IT supervision using an intuitive Web interface.
