Outlawing State-Sponsored Nuclear-Procurement Programs

Spector highlighted in last month's issue examines the crucial role that state-sponsored illicit nuclear procurement activities have played in advancing the nuclear programs of Iran and North Korea. The study proposes to outlaw such activities through the accretion of declarations by international and multilateral bodies condemning this conduct.

Critical Issues Forum students attend Nagasaki Youth Forum

Last month, CNS Critical Issues Forum students  participated in the "Forum of Youth Communicators for a World without Nuclear Weapons" in Nagasaki, Japan. The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nagasaki University, and the United Nations Regional Center for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific coordinated the event. Students collaborated to create and present recommendations for achieving a nuclear-free world before submitting them to United Nations Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Kim Won-soo. 

While in Japan, Masako Toki, CNS research associate and CIF coordinator presented at the  "Nuclear Disarmament as the Human Security Challenge" symposium coordinated by the Japan Association for Human Security Studies at Soka University in Tokyo. Toki spoke about the need for disarmament and nonproliferation education in order to make progress toward peace and security and a world free of nuclear weapons.

In a recent interview with
Politico Magazine, CNS Senior Research Associate Josh Pollack discussed recent pronouncements from Kim Jong Un and President-elect Donald Trump, and the potential for diplomacy between North Korea and the United States. 

Jeffrey Lewis, Director of the East Asia Nonproliferation Program at CNS, dissected president-elect Trump's recent tweets about the US nuclear arsenal in an interview with The Atlantic, and urged caution in reading too deeply into these pronouncements.

Summer internship applications open
CNS is accepting applications for paid undergraduate internships for Summer 2017 now through February 15.  The position provides an opportunity to research WMD issues, including nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, as well as regional security issues.
