COCA's Tallahassee Arts Guide is now live!
The Tallahassee Arts Guide, at www.tallahasseearts.org, is COCA's comprehensive calendar and guide to the arts, and includes events, "Classified" listings, plenty of directories and more. We are adding the final touches to the site, along with a soon-to-be-revealed new COCA website.
We strongly encourage you to post all your school related arts events on the
Tallahassee Arts Guide.
We'll promote your programming to the general public for FREE and maybe even feature it in a COCA article in the Democrat!

Teen dreams take root at LeMoyne art camp
Teens usually spend the summer months hanging out with friends, working at temporary jobs, or conscripted into baby-sitting younger siblings, but many local teenagers find more creative ways to spend their school break. The LeMoyne Center for Visual Arts offers summer camps for kids of all ages, and the Teen Foundation program is a popular option. Campers choose from five, two-week sections, each focused on a different period of art history.

 Oasis campers connect with arts and artists
Five-year-old Dorothy Matthews could barely contain her zeal for a new joke.She provided the setup: "Did you hear about the actor who fell through the floor?" Then, with the comedic timing of a seasoned stand-up, she delivered the punchline: "It was just a stage he was going through."
Dorothy's quip was perfectly suited for the week-long I'm a Star summer camp she was attending. Hosted by the Oasis Center for Women and Girls, the Girls Can Do Anything program offers a series of camps, each with a different theme. This camp focused on the performing and visual arts while empowering girls, ages 5-15, to dream big.

 Creator's vision plays on at FAMU theater camp
Irene C. Edmonds was a local visionary and cultural catalyst who believed deeply in the power of theater to change and broaden children's lives. As a FAMU professor, she established the Creative Children's Theatre in 1948 and directed it for 12 years. Her legacy lives on in FAMU's youth theater summer camp named in her honor, and for the past 20 years, hundreds of campers have benefited from their experience.

 FSU has been conducting music camp for 75 years
Every summer for the last 75 years, young musicians from all over the region have descended upon the FSU College of Music, instruments in tow. They are seeking expert instruction in piano, wind and string instruments, voice, drums, guitar and marching band, as well as composition, improvisation, theory and music history. With 14 different music camps offered, the opportunities to learn and grow are plentiful. One of Florida State University's more unusual music camps focuses on tuba and euphonium, or "low brass," a designation that refers to the pitch of the instruments.

 Young campers bond with Shakespeare
After a long hiatus, the Southern Shakespeare Company is back and better than ever. What began more than 20 years ago as a Shakespeare festival in Kleman Plaza has been resurrected as an organization that offers not only a free annual festival but also much more. Over the past three years, educational programming has been developed including workshops, classroom experiences, a sonnet contest, and performance opportunities for youngsters. This year marked the first summer camp, called Damsels, Daggers, & Death.

Kids In Need Teacher Grants (Deadlines: through September 30)
Various grants provide K-12 educators with funding to provide innovative learning opportunities for their students. The Kids In Need Foundation helps to engage students in the learning process by supporting our most creative and important educational resource - our nation's teachers.Click

 Moss Foundation Teacher Grants (Deadline: September 30)
Applications may be made for a grant of $1,000 to support a new or evolving program that integrates the arts into educational programming. The purpose is to aid and support teachers who wish to establish an effective learning tool using the arts in teaching children with learning disabilities and other special needs.  Target Field Trip Grants (Deadline: October 1)
Target is offering $700 for K-12 teachers to take their classrooms outdoors. Field trips may include art museums, environmental projects, cultural events, and much more. Grants do not cover any equipment such as computers, software, or audio/visual hardware. Click

 The Fender Music Foundation Grants (Deadline: Rolling)
The Foundation accepts grant applications throughout the year from 501(c)(3) organizations that are established, ongoing, and sustainable. Organizations should provide music instruction for people of any age who would not otherwise have the opportunity to learn. The Grant Committee reviews applications three times a year, and grant awards range from $500-5,000 in value. Click

VSA Florida International Young Soloist Program
VSA Florida is proud to announce the annual statewide program featuring the talent of Florida's young musicians and vocalists. Prior to the application process for the International Young Soloist Program each year, VSA Florida facilitates an adjudicated statewide program to recognize the talent of our young musicians. Finalists selected by a panel of judges are given a chance to perform at a professional venue to be determined each year. These finalists, as well as all other applicants, will represent Florida by having their musical entries sent to Washington, DC to compete in the VSA International Young Soloist Program. Add your school plays, concerts, performances, exhibits, and festivals directly to our new Tallahassee Arts Guide. It only takes a few minutes to register and send us information about your arts related school events. They will be listed on the Tallahassee Arts Guide and we'll

 Performers Wanted for Jumpstart to Success: Back to School Community Experience (Deadline: August 6)
This annual event provides book bags, school supplies, free haircuts and hair braiding, lunch, games and wholesome family entertainment for 5,000 students and their families in the Tallahassee area. They are looking for performers (dance teams, musicians, poets, singers, etc.) to entertain the passers-by and others with their talent. They must be willing to perform pro-bono as a service to the community. Typically 10 -12 minutes is the allotted time. All acts must be suitable for all ages - this is family friendly event co-sponsored by the Mayor's Office, WALMART, and several other entities. More info

 TYO Orchestra Registration (Deadline August 13)
Registration for the Tallahassee Youth Orchestras is now open. The TYO offers four orchestral ensembles for music students of all levels and ages. These ensembles rehearse weekly on Sunday afternoons and perform four traditional concerts a year as well as additional performances within the community. In addition to ensemble training, students receive specialized coaching for their instrument or instrument family. The TYO is still accepting auditions for the 2016-2017 season. Contact

 COCA's Music as Muse Call to Artists (Deadline: August 16)
Art and music share an aesthetic language and terms like rhythm, harmony, texture, improvisation, and tonality are equally descriptive in both disciplines. There is a synergy between these methods of creative expression and the Music as Muse exhibition will showcase how music can serve as inspiration for works of art. All artists 18 years of age or older who reside within a 100 mile radius of Tallahassee may submit artwork for consideration. Check out the details here.
 CHROMOTHERAPY (Deadline: August 19)
This exhibition is all about color and color theory.The science of using colors to adjust body vibrations to frequencies that result in health and harmony is the definition of CHROMOTHERAPY. Each color possesses frequencies of a specific vibration, and each vibration is related to different physical symptoms. It is open to all artists 18+. For more details, click here.
 Free Masterclass for 2016 All-State Flute & Piccolo Auditions (August 20)
Tallahassee Flute Club is offering All-State help sessions at no cost. Each session will be an open master class format, so students just need to bring their flutes and music. Attendees are free to just observe or they can volunteer to play. See the details

 Call for Vendors TFP FEST The Fuzzy Pineapple Art + Craft Festival 2016 (Deadline: September 17)
The Fuzzy Pineapple is hosting its annual Art and Craft Festival on September 17 and has openings for participating student and local visual and verbal artists, growers, food vendors and entertainers. Artists, poets, authors, chefs, painters, sculptors, yoga instructors, dance instructors, singers, dancers, bakers, gymnasts, actors, filmographers, photographers, models etc. Artists can showcase their talents onstage and around the festival grounds, participate in art contests throughout the festival, or sell their wares at the festival.  Alphonse Mucha and Art Nouveau Projections grades 9-12 Project (Participation Deadline: September 26, 2016)
The Museum of Fine Arts, Florida State University invites high schools to participate in the Alphonse Mucha and Art Nouveau Projections Project. The theme is based on the Alphonse Mucha exhibition to be hosted at the museum October 14-November 20. Submitted artwork will appear on a slide show that runs during the exhibition and on the Museum's website.  Arts & Antiques Fair grades K-12 (Participation Deadline: October)
The Museum of Fine Arts, Florida State University invites K-12 schools to participate in its annual fundraiser The Arts & Antiques Fair.The Fair is a fundraiser for the Museum and will also provide an opportunity for participating schools to raise funds for the issue or entity of their choice.Deadline to notify MoFA of your participation is October (date TBA) after the elementary art teacher's meeting.  Art of the Educator: Call to Participate (Participation Deadline: February 1, 2017)
The Museum of Fine Arts, Florida State University invites all current and retired K-12 art educators in Leon and surrounding counties. Includes: Gadsden, Jefferson, and Wakulla to submit artwork for an exhibition of art educators artwork in the summer of 2017. Artwork should have been made within the last 5-6 years.  FASA seeking student artwork for display (Deadline: Rolling)
The
Florida Association of School Administrators is excited to have the opportunity to feature student art in our office in Tallahassee. Both 2D and 3D work will be accepted and
20" x 28" frames will be provided. Artwork should be delivered to the office. If teachers/students want to donate the art, FASA will keep it on display permanently or, if students would like there artwork returned, FASA will arrange it with the teacher. Call for Arts Mentors at Raa Middle School
Local visual artists, musicians, dancers, and theater professionals are sought to provide mentoring to middle school arts students in Raa's Magnet Program. These students know they want a life filled with arts experiences and you can show them how. If the arts have been an important part of your life and you want to pass that on, this is the perfect opportunity for you. The commitment is very low, just one hour per week, and Leon County Schools takes care of all the rest at no cost to you. The Secret Link Between Jazz and Physics
Scientists need hobbies. The grueling work of navigating complex theory and the politics of academia can get to a person, even one as laid back as Dartmouth professor and astrophysicist Stephon Alexander. So Alexander plays the saxophone, though at this point it may not be accurate to call his avocation a spare time pursuit, since John Coltrane has become as important to him as Einstein, Kepler, and Newton.

 Before settling on the pen name Mark Twain, Samuel Langhorne Clemens signed his writings with the pseudonym 'Josh'. Twain's other noms de plume include 'Rambler', 'Sergeant Fathom', and (perhaps unbeatably) 'W. Epaminondas Adrastus Blab'. Twain also came up with some pretty zany names for his many pet cats, including Beelzebub, Blatherskite, Buffalo Bill, Satan, Sour Mash, and Zoroaster.
