serve on the CRCA Board of Directors. A few years ago, there was only one Associate Member Director. Under
Past-President George Patterson, the Board added a second Associate Director. For 2018, a third Associate Director has been added. CRCA Member Brad Schwab, The Schwab Group, joins Kim Kwasiborski, SJ Mallein, Inc. and Greg Dedic, North Coast Roofing Systems.

CRCA's leadership and friends
well represented at the NRCA’s Fly In to Washington DC. NRCA CEO Reid Ribble challenged the industry to join together in DC to bring the roofing industry voice to the legislators. From Immigration Reform to Workforce Development and Regulation, CRCA’s leaders and 25 roofing industry professionals from the State of Illinois brought the message to key legislators about issues including a path to legal immigration. Shop class was removed from high schools in the 1980’s and as a result, the construction industry workforce has been deeply affected. Plus, we need funding towards development of construction industry education to help train people interested in out industry. Finally, we requested that OSHA become more collaborative and education focused in its approach to safety. Let’s find a way to get back to partnerships to educate for better compliance. Thanks NRCA, for a great event.

The CRCA had tremendous exposure
at the International Roofing Expo. We were represented at the Affiliate Executive Council Meetings participating in meeting with other roofing associations from around the US and Canada, NRCA’s CEO, Chairman of the Board, Vice Chairman, and NRCA’s staff as well. Plus, we presented on CRCA’s collaboration with NRCA and others during the Structural Lightweight Concrete and Moisture in roofing assembly program with Matt Dupuis, SRI, Inc. CRC’s Bill McHugh also moderated the NRCA’s Union Contractor Council breakfast panel based on an agenda that was developed with CRCA’s leaders and other associations nationally.
CRCA Leaders were involved in NRCA's formation over 100 years ago and are still engaged today. Several participate in NRCA’s Board of Directors. CRCA’s Rod Petrick was elected as a Vice-Chairman at NRCA. CRCA’s Past President George Patterson, and CRCA Members Luke Duffy and Alex Hernandez also serve on NRCA’s Board of Directors.

Thanks to your help
Illinois Senate Bill 237, the coal tar sealant ban, did not get enough votes to pass the Senate Environment and Conservation Committee. Thank you to everyone who contacted their state senators to voice their opposition, it really did make a difference. This bill is not scheduled for any hearings at this time, but CRCA will keep updated on this and any legislative issues that may impact the roofing industry.

worked together to assemble code proposals for the Illinois Adoption of the 2018 International Energy Conservation Code. CRCA’s work with the State has been well received over the years. Look for more info in the next few Enewsletters as the process continues.

Roofing Makes Tax Reform Bill
|
|
|
For a roof, the depreciation period is 39 years.
In Section 179 of the Federal Tax Code, a new proposal was approved to reduce the “Roofs” depreciation period from 39 years to the year the expense occurred. Roofs are included in the definition for “Qualified Real Property”.
The new tax reform legislation states that :
“any of the following improvements to non-residential real property … (A) Roofs (B) Heating and Ventilation (C) Fire protection and alarm systems (D) Security systems”, … are part of the legislation that allows depreciation to take place the year the improvement took place.
This is a big deal for the roofing contractor and roofing industry. That building owner that was close to buying a new roof now, but it was too expensive, now has a new reason to make the investment. The company gets a tax deduction for that new roof. Make your customers aware of this new legislation. It might get you that next project.

CRCA Trade Show & Seminars

The CRCA Trade Show Committee is already hard at work planning the 2019 event. Planning is underway on some new and exciting seminars such as:
Workforce Recruitment, Responsible Spec Writing, Ventilation and much more. The committee is also developing a steep-slope program, "Anything But Shingles," which will include information on cedar shake, metal roofing, metal shingles and more.

Thanks to them, “Roofing Week in Chicago – 35 Years Strong” – and many shows before this one – were all great with our growing attendance every year! We had record attendance, Education, Relationship Building and a first-class Trade Show all in one place January 18 & 19, 2018.
The CRCA Trade Show & Seminars featured seven hours of education, all registered with RCI, AIA, ALA and others for continuing education credits. Plus, the 150 exhibit booths at this year’s show kept attendees until the very end.
We look forward to seeing you in January 2019 for another great Trade Show!
