Community Members,

Over the last few weeks, we have seen an increase in burglaries to businesses in the downtown area of Golden.

Criminals are forcing their way into businesses using some type of prying tool.  Once inside the business the burglar or burglars are taking their time going through individual desks and cabinets, looking for money, cash boxes, or other small but valuable items. Businesses without alarm systems are typically the targets recently.
Burglary Prevention Tips

One of the best preventive measures against burglars is visibility.  Make sure your business is well-lit, has open spaces, low counters, and large uncluttered display windows.  Put the cash register towards the front of the business.  This will make any criminal activity more visible from the street and harder for a burglar to hide.
  • Keep a complete, up-to-date inventory of your merchandise and property.
  • Prevent easy access to the roof and fire escape from the ground.
  • DO NOT cover up windows with advertising or display materials.
  • Use shelving and displays no higher than five feet, these need to be lower in front of display windows.
  • Make sure the exterior of the building and property is well-lit.
  • Try to eliminate hiding places for people around your building, especially in the rear or loading areas.
  • Consider installing an alarm system.
  • Keep plants and landscaping in good condition.
  • Ensure you are using deadbolt locks with a minimum of one inch throw on all exterior doors.
  • Consider reinforcing the door around the handle with a stainless steel door reinforcer.
  • Pin the hinges on exterior doors that swing out.
  • Replace hollow-core doors with solid-core doors.  Make sure you inspect the frame as well for weakness.
  • You can secure windows by adding clear poly carbonate sheets.
DO NOT leave money on the premises.  If you must leave money, make sure it is kept in an anchored well-constructed safe.  If your business handles money often, consider an anchored drop-vault where employees can drop the money securely.

Pay close attention to anyone watching you or your business.  You might notice them looking at the building itself, either on the inside or out.  They could be looking for safes, video cameras, or alarm systems.

DO NOT ignore your instincts or hunches.  Be cautious of anyone acting in a manner not consistent with your regular customers.  Things to watch out for are:
  • Are they dressed inappropriately?
  • Asking to use a non-public restroom?
  • Are they trying to cover their head or face?
  • Are they nervous?
This is just a brief list of preventative measures you might consider taking to help protect your employees and property.

What if your business has been burglarized?
  • Immediately call 911.
  • DO NOT go in - the burglar may still be inside.
  • DO NOT open for business - your employees and customers may destroy or alter valuable evidence.
