ELECTIVE Workshop

With increasing crashes nationwide, now is the time for law enforcement and first responders to gain further knowledge they need to make a difference in roadway safety. This training opportunity will provide participants with skills necessary to assemble a Road Safety Assessment (RSA) team, conduct an RSA and prioritize and mitigate any safety issues the RSA may uncover.

In addition, you will learn basic traffic engineering principles and how to "See Something, Say Something" for road safety.

Who Should Attend

Public safety and transportation professionals involved in making decisions regarding safety on Connecticut roadways.

Chiefs of Police, Legal Traffic Authorities, Traffic Sergeants, Engineers, Public Works Directors, Highway Supervisors and other engineering and law enforcement personnel involved in road safety are encouraged to attend.

Course Instructor

Craig Allred is a Transportation Specialist with the Safety and Design Team for the FHWA Resource Center. He has instructed and/or presented in 54 states/territories/countries and has over thirty years of expertise in traffic safety; retiring as a Director for the Utah Department of Public Safety. Mr. Allred has a Bachelor's degree in Psychology/Criminal Justice and is a member of several international and national committees.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Define RSA and describe the steps involved.

Describe the role of law enforcement in RSAs.

Discuss the elements of crash causation and their interaction.

Consider basic engineering, design and maintenance factors for referral.

Successfully communicate with Transportation Agencies.

Demonstrate a familiarity with modern intersection types along with their advantages and disadvantages.

Identify ways to "See Something, Say Something" for road safety!
