CTC Global Receives "2017 Business of the Year Award" from the Irvine California Chamber of Commerce

The city of Irvine California is a dynamic economic powerhouse on a national scale. Irvine has been rated one of the top cities for start-up businesses and its strong, fast-growing economy helped place Orange County as one of the top ten fastest growing job markets in the US. It was voted the best-run city in the U.S. by 24/7 Wall Street, chosen by CNNMoney.com as the fourth-best place to live in the United States, and Businessweek listed Irvine as the fifth-best city in the United States. Irvine is also home to over five major higher educational institutions. Though the 2016 census suggests that just under 260,000 people permanently reside in Irvine, that number nearly doubles during standard business hours.
 
The Greater Irvine Chamber of Commerce, Representing nearly 800 businesses, is among only 206 of the approximately 7,000 chambers across the nation to receive a Four-Star Accreditation by the United States Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber's mission is to promote an economic climate that strengthens the competitiveness of local services, programs, and information. Each year the Greater Irvine Chamber of Commerce and the City of Irvine recognize Irvine businesses that have demonstrated the principles of community service, charitable contributions, and the best traditions of good corporate citizenship.
 
The Business of the Year award is offered by the chamber to companies that display exceptional growth through the creation of jobs, have innovative products or services, who provide exemplary customer services, and who demonstrate economic support of the general Irvine business community. It is presented at the annual Celebrate Irvine  event which had a record crowd of 400 guests this year and included a VIP reception, providing guests with an opportunity to shake hands with local elected officials and sample foods from Orange County's finest restaurants. CTC Global Participates at Cigre Symposium in Dublin

CTC Global, represented by Sean Daly and Peter Hughes, participated in the Cigre Symposium & Technical Exhibition held at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland between 30th May and 1st June.
 
"This was a great opportunity to meet friends and colleagues, old and new, from the transmission sector," said Hughes. "The level of interest was significant, and we enjoyed fruitful dialogue with participants from 16 countries at our booth alone." Naturally, Irish Transmission Operators and Asset Owners were well represented, "but the level of interest from wider EU and beyond really surprised us," added Hughes.
 
The event also illustrated that the capabilities of composite technologies which, while well adopted in certain markets, are perhaps even now not as well understood in more mature markets. "It was particularly encouraging to see an increasing level of interest from countries in mainland Europe," stated Hughes. "In fact, some are coming to the view that ACCC conductor also represents a valuable component in the "Smart Grid" technology mix."
 
With 50,000 km installed, ACCC conductor is increasingly being actively considered by the Transmission and Distribution community for both new lines and reconductoring. The low-sag benefits, coupled with a capacity increase of up to 100% on the same towers deliver a "quick-win" for such applications.
 
Transmission operators faced with load imbalances, particularly in areas where large amounts of renewable - and often asynchronous - generation are being fed into the grid with concomitant temperature spikes are particularly interested in identifying where composite technologies have a role to play.

CTC Global Exhibits at CIRED International Conference in Glasgow, Scotland

CTC Global's composite core conductor technologies are generally more aligned to longer transmission lengths. However, the UK generally and Scotland in particular are proving to be strong markets for ACCC® high-performance composite core conductors. When increased capacity within existing pathways is required through some of the most striking scenery in Europe requiring a minimum of disturbance, the operator's options are, indeed, limited.
 
Naturally, CTC Global had a strong desire to engage with this local client base, while also placing itself firmly in the middle of the distribution supplier community, so we chose to participate in this annual event which was held in Glasgow, Scotland this year.
 
"While many of the challenges are similar, the Scottish requirement for heavy ice load sustainment in particular plays to CTC's strengths" stated Peter Hughes, CTC's VP for Northern Europe. "One of the reasons for our success in, and potential of, these markets is CTC's development of a ULS (Ultra-Low Sag) core, strung on existing infrastructure which is several decades old and which traverses particularly undulating terrain, a common feature of the Scottish Highlands," he added.
 
Naturally, the majority of visitors to CTC Global's exhibit were from the DSO community, representing countries ranging from Northern Europe to Australasia and many in-between. "However, the number of FEED (Front End Engineering Design), EPCs and other specialist consultancies present at the show also contributed to making this a very worthwhile event," added Hughes.
 
With nearly 50,000 km energized or contracted, CTC Global's ACCC® conductor technology is increasingly being adopted where higher transmission capacity within tight pathways is required. ACCC has also been accredited by a third-party agency to reduce line-losses over a given length by between 27 and 31% when compared with traditional ACSR conductors.

CTC Global's ACCC® Conductor Becomes the First Conductor in History to Receive 3rd Party Certification for Energy Efficiency and CO2 Emission Reductions

CTC Global ACCC conductor is the first electric transmission conductor in history to earn SCS certification for CO2 emission reductions resulting from improved energy efficiency.  SCS Global Services (SCS) verified that ACCC conductor reduces CO2 emissions associated with transmission line losses by 27 to 31 percent under certain design conditions compared to conventional steel reinforced ACSR conductors, the 100-year old technology currently used in most electric transmission and distribution power lines.
  
Tobias Schultz, Manager of Corporate Sustainability Services at SCS stated: "SCS Global's Certification of ACCC conductor creates significant new opportunities for corporate and governmental entities seeking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for regulatory or voluntary purposes. Certification allows transmission owning electric utilities and developers to evaluate and quantify CO 2 emission reductions associated with using ACCC conductor in place of less efficient ASCR conductor, and to explore pathways for monetizing those reductions or using them to meet regulatory obligations."
  
SCS is a trusted and neutral global leader with more than three decades of experience in third-party environmental, sustainability and certification, auditing, testing and standards development. SCS also certified  Conductor Comparison Program tool as a valid way to estimate reductions in line losses and associated CO2 emissions achieved by installing ACCC conductor in lieu of traditional ACSR conductor. Both SCS certifications were conducted in accordance with ISO 14044:2006 standard for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), a methodology used for evaluating the environmental performance of various products.

SCS Global's Certification Assessment of the ACCC conductor considered a range of conductor sizes, line lengths and voltages representing a number of project types in countries such as the U.S., Indonesia, Germany, India and Chile that have varied grid mixes and associated emission factors.

Low Sag and High Efficiency is a Winning Combination

As transmission designers, we are faced with numerous challenges and opportunities. Selecting the best conductor for the job is not always easy. However, the benefits of low-sag and high-efficiency offer a winning combination.
 
Looking at the comparison chart below based on lab testing performed by Ontario Hydro at Kinectrics Lab, you can not only see the difference in thermal sag between the conductors tested, you can also see how much cooler the ACCC conductor operated under the 1,600 amp test load. 60 to 80 degrees cooler reflects a huge improvement in efficiency.
Improved efficiency translates into higher emergency capacity, reduced line losses, reduced fuel consumption, and in some cases, reduced GHG emissions. Additionally, generation capacity that is otherwise wasted supporting line losses is now freed-up to deliver.

CTC Global created CCP software to help system planners and engineers compare the ampacity, line losses, thermal and ice load sag, and economic aspects of nearly any conductor type and size, so the numerous advantages of the ACCC conductor can be fully realized.
 
The user simply selects the conductor types and sizes from drop down menus and enters the appropriate values & assumptions highlighted in the yellow boxes.
