Darleny Suriel, City College ’22 and BMCC ’20, developed an interest in political science after taking classes at BMCC and volunteering with civic engagement initiatives. Through this exposure, she found herself testifying before Congress for an expansion of the federal Pell Grant program. She also served as a youth co-chair of the education committee for Mayor Eric Adams’ transition team and landed a Congressional internship.
Darleny’s advice: “Don’t ever think you're not good enough or that you don’t belong in certain spaces. I have been able to use my experiences as an Afro-Dominican immigrant to advocate for people who haven’t had the same opportunities as me.”
