May 2012 Volume 32, Issue 915,434 members strong!
Greetings!

Life-Time Membership: What does it really mean to be a member of the PTSA for life? Why would anyone want to support the PTSA after their student has "left the building?"

I am close to this very decision as my youngest son will be a senior next year. To help me answer this question, I spoke to several current "life time members" and asked them why they chose to stay involved.

My first interview was with a long-time math teacher at Redmond High School. He and his wife, who is also a teacher, have renewed their memberships in a number of PTSAs as long as they have been established teachers in Lake Washington School District. Sandy Hargraves told me, "This is my 40th year in the classroom. I think I have been a PTSA member for most of those years except when I taught overseas. Probably 34 of those years we (my wife and I) belonged to the local PTA or PTSA. If I wasn't a member of RHS PTSA then my wife was, and I was the PTSA member at our children's schools. One year our children were in 3 different schools, so we had 4 memberships between us. For the past 6 years we have been members at two different high schools."

The next person I spoke with was Victoria Findley, one of our amazing school nurses. For 28 years, Victoria has been a member of those PTSAs where her children went to school and where she has worked. She has also been a local, district, regional and state leader of this organization. So, I asked Victoria what the most important reason was for her to be a member. Victoria told me, "The most important reason for continued membership in this organization is to support the mission & vision of PTA for the children. I value the volunteer spirit, camaraderie and resourcefulness exhibited in the many local units working toward common goals.... Participation in PTSA grows lifelong friendships and meaningful relationships."

One of my mentors and a long-time PTA leader is Wendy DeLong. She has been a member of a PTA for "29 complete years, 10 [years] since my youngest graduated from high school." She explained to me why she became a member and what it means to her, "Initially, like most parents, joining PTA and volunteering was a way to be involved in my child's education and school. A bonus for me was the opportunity to meet other parents. With my husband's career in the Coast Guard, it was important for me to get connected to the communities where we lived in order to discover the best opportunities for my boys."

Wendy DeLong summarized her reasons for being in PTA. She believes that, "the mission of PTA is universal." PTA is about "caring about children and ensuring their welfare" and this benefits everyone in the community. And it is an "obligation of all generations to be responsible for the education and welfare of children and does not end when one's youngest receives a high school diploma." Sandy Hargraves echoed this thought when he said, "It really does take a community to raise a child. PTSA is a great educational alliance."

After hearing what other long-time members have had to say about staying connected, I realized that this is what I want to do, too. Since most PTA's don't often actively pursue alumni members, it will most likely be up to me to make sure I become a member in the future. I can also become a "Friend of the PTA" through Washington State PTA by calling their main office. I like the idea of supporting my community by being a life-time member - even after my son has "left the building."

Developing A Useful Budget

The decisions you make are a reflection of your collective values
How does your organization decide where to spend its money? The decisions you make are a reflection of your collective values, habit and compromise. Developing a budget for your organization helps ensure that your spending is based on conscious intention. Monitoring it helps you stay on track to meet your goals and walk your talk. Fun, right? It can be!

The Vision. Before you even start putting numbers to paper, you will want to make sure that your Board agrees on common goals. Have those hard conversations first. This is the time to schedule a retreat with your board members, whether that means a weekend at a beach side resort or Monday evening in the school library. Be prepared to deal with big issues.  Make sure everyone gets heard. Also consider surveying your membership - this can be as simple or elaborate as you please, and helps you to stay in touch with the people whose interests you are serving. Convention Survival Kit

What you need to have the best of times at Convention
1. The right attitude! Recently this Editor was asked what I was "doing for myself" to celebrate Mother's Day. My answer: "I'm having three days of amazing like-minded adult conversation, two fun nights out in a row, catered meals, a fancy breakfast at a four star hotel." Attending Convention is not crazy, or a chore, it is a Party!  Continue Reading ... >>

Membership Update

Congratulations to our 100% Award Winners!

Every Member Matters Our current enrollment is 15,434 members.

Congratulations to the following PTAs who achieved the state's 100% Membership Award this year:

  • McAuliffe Elementary for the first year!
  • Alcott, Peter Kirk and Wilder Elementaries for the 4th year!

The definition of 100% Membership for this award is having at least as many paid members in your local PTA unit as students enrolled in your school. This means that each child is represented....What could be better than every child having at least one adult willing to join the PTA as a voice for their future? This is an admirable accomplishment by these PTAs, and it is a wonderful gift for all the students they serve

Please remember entering your incoming officers into the WA State enrollment database.

Make an Impact - Be part of the Input

Siri Bliesner
Siri Bliesner, Director District Five
As a Board Member representing the whole community, I want to ensure that every parent and community member realizes that their input and involvement is critical to the success of our kids.

The LWSD Board recently affirmed this critical role of the community to impact decisions.  The Board recognizes that as the impact of a decision on stakeholders increases, the amount of public participation expected also increases. The challenge is that more public participation requires increased time and resources from both the school district and the community.

Your input does make an impact and the Board wants to make sure your voice is heard.

Over the next year, everyone will be asked to be actively involved in decisions that impact our schools, our children and our community.  These opportunities will come in many different ways, from surveys to public forums, to online communications, and probably, a few more evening meetings. Look for these opportunities to be heard.
