Varsity Softball

During the pregame ceremonies for Senior Day on May 9th, The Lady Eagles Varsity Softball Team welcomed our former Head-of-Schools Dr. Dave Baker, as he helped bless and honor our two seniors, Franny Manzo and Jordan Hodge, who played their last regular-season home game of the year against our cross-town rival, Saddleback Valley Christian.   In front of CVCS fans, coaches, and administrators, Dr. Baker gathered both senior pitchers on the mound. Surrounded by the players from both teams, he prayed and offered words of wisdom for both of our seniors as they write the final chapters of their CVCS careers and begin new seasons of their lives. Thanks Dr. Baker!

Immediately following the Senior Day Ceremony, against the heavy-hitting and undefeated Warriors, CVCS undoubtedly played their best game of the year. Franny Manzo pitched all seven innings, scattered 8 hits, and only allowed 4 runs in the 15 - 6 loss. Offensively, the Eagles scored 6 runs on 7 hits. Chloe Purgason and Christina Argaez led the Eagle attack with 2 hits each. Chloe doubled and tripled and knocked in 2 RBIs while Christina added another RBI. Tasha Peterson lined a single to right field, knocking in 2 more RBIs. Hanna Amsden squared up a Warrior fastball and sent it deep into the gap in left-center field for a triple.   Hanna scored a bit later on Franny's sacrifice fly. Despite the loss, the Lady Eagles ended their regular season with a great effort!

On Tuesday, May 16th, the Lady Eagles faced off at home against Crean Lutheran in the wild-card round of CIF playoffs. Starter Jordan Hodge pitched well in the disappointing 15 - 1 loss.  Defensively, the extra portion of bobbles and drops gave the Saint hitters too many extra opportunities, while the normally-potent Eagle bats were held in check. Cassandra Jeltema walked, stole second and ended up scoring the lone Eagle run when Franny Manzo tripled deep into the left-center field gap. Franny also pitched well in the final 3 innings in relief to end the season and cap a great overall team effort!

Your Lady Eagles wish to thank you for your support. We congratulate them for their tremendous season!

5th Grade - Walk Through the American Revolution

On May 3rd, both 5th grade classes participated in the Walk Through the American Revolution presentation offered through California Weekly. The students prepared memorized pieces depicting real characters in American history that were alive during that time period. Each student dressed up as their character. Students also memorized key vocabulary words, the Declaration of Independence, and performed skits based on three important battles during the war. It was an excellent event that wrapped up our 5th grade studies of American history. Mrs. Wilhelm and Miss Panepinto were very proud of their students and everyone enjoyed watching history "come to life!"

6th Grade - Walk Through the Ancient World

No, it was not Caesar Augustus and his court strolling through the CVCS campus last week....it was actually our energetic band of 6th grade students!!  As part of their history curriculum, the 6th graders participated in retelling the ancient histories of Egypt, Greece, and Rome.  Students became part of these ancient worlds through entertaining character reenactments and group presentations.  Each student portrayed a notable figure, such as Paul, Alexander the Great, or Queen Nefertiti, through both costume and speech.  Grouped into three different civilization teams, students worked together using storytelling, drama, and games to bring the customs, characters, and history of the ancient world here to CVCS.

"The program was so much fun, but at the same time, we learned a lot more about three of the civilizations we had studied in class," said 6th grader, Ryan. "The leader was enthusiastic and used games and competitions to keep us interested."

California Weekly provides 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students with the opportunity to actually become part of the history they are studying in classroom, with the goal of developing a love of history.  At CVCS, we were fortunate to have this opportunity available to our students this year.  It has definitely sparked a deeper interest in ancient civilization across the 6th grade student body!!

SQUIRM

SQUIRM is now underway with students showing enthusiasm about reading and meeting their goals.

The THIRD SQUIRM tally sheets are due on Friday, May 18th. Students have read a total of 51,340 hours in week two and they are half-way to their goal! Great job students! Also don't forget to dress up for Storybook Dress-up Day!  Students may come to school on Friday dressed up as their favorite story character.  Please - no pretend weapons or masks.

Please mark your calendars to join us for a Principal's library reading night for grades 4-6 on Tues. Campus Life
2nd SHINE Auction Winner - Elementary Principal for a Day

SHINE Auction Winner, Julianna, 4th grade, spent last Friday in Mrs. Hannum's shoes being the Elementary Principal for a day!  It was an exciting day for Julianna as she is started her day with her very own clipboard and whistle.  She lead morning announcements and flag ceremony.  Then she visited classrooms and distributed "Caught being good" pencils and SQUIRM prizes to students.  Julianna participated in a special "State of the School" meeting with Dr. Sipus and talked about her recommendations to improving the school.  Julianna invited two special friends to her office to have lunch and made other announcements in various classrooms.  The final highlight of her day was when she called her classroom over the intercom to announce that she was canceling a test and instead had a movie afternoon with icecream cups and cookies with her classmates!

Ladies Library Luncheon

The attendees at the Ladies' Library Luncheon were treated to a lovely afternoon of sunshine, fashion, reflection, and fellowship. Every guest was greeted with, "We ant you to feel like a princess today!" by Mrs. Hannum right before she placed a tiara on each of their heads.

There was a Princess and the Pea photo booth opportunity; Jennifer Trimino shared an inspiring testimonial and devotion followed by a delicious lunch and a 'star-studded' fashion show.  CVCS's own model students and Moms brought us looks from Macy's.  Roses were delivered to many of our guests with the assistance of committee members making arrangements with many senders ahead of time. Beautiful succulent centerpieces were sold to the highest bidder at each table and there were a wide variety raffle items.

It was a lovely time to celebrate that honored God and made money for the library at the same time.  Thank you to all the supported or attended, looking forward to next year's event already!

CVCS Cheer Team Invited to American Idol

Sixteen excited girls were invited to stand and sit in the coveted spots directly in front of the judges, behind the judges, on the stage, and in the Pit at the live American Idol show.  Athletic Director, Dan Dodd, effused, "Our girls were awesome in every way...in dress, demeanor, every way measurable."  Not only did they have an EAGLE EYE view of the show, they also had a chance to meet many celebrities.  A highlight was running into two of their favorite contestants, Joshua and Jessica,  after dinner while shopping.  More cheer adventures to come!

Junior High Spring Activity

CVCS Junior High students had a blast on Friday night!

For their Spring Activity they had a huge "Spring" event; students played in an inflatable maze, competed in bungee racing and bounced on bounce houses. Students also enjoyed taking goofy pictures in the photo booth, creating a graffiti wall, and being decorated with crazy hair, face paint, & henna.

Students and teachers had a wonderful time of fellowship. Thank you to the CVCS 2011-2012 JH SLT! Congratulations on a wonderful year; your leadership, dedication, and hard work have produced many memorable events and memories for our junior high!
