Executive Director's Report / Rapport de la Directrice Générale

(Le français suit) In this month's report from the Executive Director there are some very exciting stories about the growing co-operative movement. Several news items are discussed, such as the US Federation of Worker Co-ops meeting in Boston, the formation of the Special Committee on Co-operatives in Parliament, and the CICOPA-North America conference. All in all, there are many great stories developing, so have a look at the report!

Awards - Including opportunity to win free CWCF Conference registration
logo 150Just a reminder that the Worker Co-op 'Best Practices Award' will be given out at this year's Conference. The Best Practices Award will enable sharing of innovative practices with other worker co-operatives in Canada to help strengthen the movement. It will also recognize worker co-operative excellence. There is a lot of great work being done, so let's celebrate it! Best Practices can be in the areas of governance, marketing, quality assurance, cost control, the triple bottom line, community impact, workplace atmosphere and more. However the priority this year is for best practices in the area of financial/ business sustainability and/or excellence in integrating/ developing new members.

A second award, the Worker Co-op Merit Award, will also be presented, to recognize outstanding contributions to the worker co-op movement by an individual. Generally but not necessarily, the recipients chosen will be from the region in which the annual CWCF Conference is held (the Ontario region, this year). The Merit Award winner and one member of the co-op from the winner of the Best Practices Award will upon request have their registration and travel expenses covered to attend the CWCF Conference. If in the area of financial/ business sustainability or new member development he Best Practices Award winner will be asked to present their best practice at the CWCF Conference.

Nominate a worker co-operative for the Best Practices Award, or an individual for the Merit Award, and tell us why in less than 500 words by writing to James Mitchell at james@canadianworker.coop Deadline for both awards is July 31, 2012.

Special Committee on Co-operatives
James Mitchell, the communications director for the CWCF, runs his own personal blog, writing about a wide range of topics, including co-operatives. Recently, he added a short post about the new special committee on co-operatives that was formed in Parliament at the end of May. James attended the debate, led by Ottawa-Vanier Member of Parliament Mauril Bélanger, and wrote about his impressions afterward. To check this out, follow this link to his blogspot.

CWCF Health and Dental Plans

Prescription drug benefits play a significant role in the overall health and well-being of worker-owners, contributing to a more productive and satisfied workforce. As a member of CWCF you have access to health benefits that can be customized to suit your co-operative's specific needs. Why pay premium levels that are based on the size of one small plan when you can access the pricing discounts of a much larger co-operative plan?

CWCF has partnered with Corporate Benefit Analysts, a firm with more than 25 years of plan consulting expertise, to provide Health and Dental programs for small co-operative groups from The Co-operators. Explore this valuable member benefit by emailing memberservices@corpben.com or speak to Yvonne on the Member Service line 1-800-463-2555.

Note: To be eligible to participate in this plan, there must be at least three permanent full time employees working a minimum of 20 hours per week and your business should be at least two years old. Other plans, good but with different features, may be available to smaller co-ops and to individual developer members of CWCF.

New Worker Co-op Set up in Chicago
Recently workers in the Republic Windows and Doors factory in Chicago lost their jobs. Like many in the rust belt of the United States, workers here were hit hard by the economic downturn of the past few years. However, the workers in the plant were resilient. They organised a worker co-op which will work democratically and fairly to produce a quality product that consumers need. For more information and to watch an interview with one of the workers, please follow this link
Interview with Rebecca Kemble
CICOPAIn May, Rebecca Kemble, President of the United States Federation of Worker Co-ops and President of CICOPA North America, was interviewed by an ICA Public Relations person. In this short exchange, she talks about many important themes, notably the modern relationship between labour and "finance capital", and the importance of building alliances. A transcript of the short discussion can be found on the CWCF website by clicking here.

Help Open Neechi Commons!

Neechi

Winnipeg's "North-end" will soon be home to Neechi Commons Community Business Complex. The complex is being developed by Neechi Foods Co-Op Ltd., which has operated a small grocery and Aboriginal specialty store for over 22 years and is well known for its leadership in community economic development, as well as for its bannock and wild blueberries. Located in a fully modernized, historic building, Neechi Commons will feature a neighbourhood supermarket, fruit and vegetable courtyard, farmers market, restaurant, bakery, specialty foods, and an Aboriginal arts store. Over 50 people are being hired to work there and the Commons is expected to play a pivotal role in helping to re-vitalize the North-end. In addition to creating economic opportunities, Neechi Commons will help create a sense of pride within the Aboriginal community and in adjoining inner-city neighbourhoods. ('Neechi', or 'Niji', means "friend", "sister" or "brother" in Cree and Ojibwa dialects.)

The construction of the complex at 865 Main St. in Winnipeg  is scheduled to be finished later this summer. However, before it opens for business an additional $500,000 is needed for inventory, final equipment and other opening costs.  Share capital and capital grants also are needed to limit mortgage financing. You can help by purchasing Neechi Investment Shares or by connecting us with other potential investors (individuals or organizations).

Neechi Foods Co-Op is owned and operated by its staff and is incorporated as a Worker Cooperative. However, its Investment Shares are available to non-members as well as to members. - Neechi is the first cooperative in Manitoba to offer Investment Shares to the general public. - Neechi is offering  two types of investment shares. Class "A" Shares are attached to a Provincial tax credit that is restricted to residents of Manitoba and Class "B" shares are designed for organizations and for individuals who do not qualify for the Manitoba tax credit. Class "B" shares sell at $1,000 apiece, with dividends projected at 5 % per year. Our Offering Statement and other information about Neechi Commons and the Investment Share Offering can be found on the Neechi website. Otherwise, please contact Neechi at neechifoods@shaw.ca or at our existing store on Dufferin Ave. Every investment is important, whether comparatively large or small. Thanks for your interest. Neechi Commons will be awesome!
