Greetings!

Greetings from the land of  ORANGE  and  BLACK !

As the holiday season settles in, we want to take the time to express our appreciation and gratitude for others. CSD continues to receive amazing support. We are grateful for our many collaborations, and for the individuals who have given so much to CSD throughout the year. These contributions and successes are why we share our monthly CalNews. Through CalNews, we can recognize the successes of our students and staff alike. It goes without saying but must be mentioned once again, thank you all for your contributions and your support of CSD throughout the year.

“Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another.” - G.K. Chesterton

With this quote in mind, CSD is a long-standing organization that was founded in 1860 and continues to grow and strengthen every year. I would like to thank CSD for all it has done for the many students and families who have passed through our doors. It all starts with the faculty, staff and administrators who have worked at CSD over the years and are to be recognized for their everlasting contribution to the school. Thank you!

By sharing this monthly CalNews with you, it is evident that there are so many things going on at CSD! Our students, families, staff, and community members are to be recognized for their exemplary contributions toward the success stories within this issue.

Thank you for showing interest in our programs and services.

With Eagle Pride,
Clark Brooke, Ed.S.

The effective Site Superintendent at the California School for the Deaf:
  1. Must build a solid foundation for the mission of CSD;
  2. Must reinforce standards of high expectations;
  3. Must foster the development of positive and productive relationships within and outside CSD;
  4. Must keenly understand and respond to challenges;
  5. Must integrate within and nurture this amazing school’s unique culture;
  6. Must lead.

I am confident that Clark possesses the competencies and passion to fulfill the above.

Scott Kerby
State Special Schools and Services Division Director
California Department of Education

Superintendent of California School for the Deaf is an extremely important position for the California Department of Education and the state as a whole. As a result, we were very careful and deliberate in our approach to making our selection. It is clear that we made the right choice when we appointed Clark Brooke, and he deserves my most sincere congratulations. I am confident he will build on the strong legacy California School for the Deaf and its community have created over its many years as part of the California public school system.
Nick Schweizer
Deputy Superintendent, Systems Support Branch
California Department of Education

I am pleased to see Clark Brooke take the helm at CSD. I was impressed that, although the Investiture was a special day for him, his presentation was about how the entire CSD community is working together to move CSD into the future. Congratulations Superintendent Brooke. You have my full support.

Our Sister Agencies

On November 16, before we gathered for the Investiture in the afternoon, we had the opportunity to meet in the morning to build partnerships with three Deaf agencies in Northern California: NorCal Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Deaf Counseling Advocacy & Referral Agency, and Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Center. It was the first time CSD CORE has hosted a formal round table with these Deaf agencies. The purpose of the meeting was to exchange resources, have a better understanding of each agency’s programs that support and serve families in Northern California, and develop collaboration efforts on community relations and IEP meetings for families and local educational agencies (LEAs). We were so fortunate to have Superintendent Clark Brooke and State Special Schools Director Scott Kerby join the meeting briefly. Their input on some pressing topics was valuable and beneficial in bringing all of us together on how we can support and serve families and work with LEAs / SELPAs better. We decided that we will have quarterly meetings with Deaf agencies going forward. What an exciting time for all of us to move ahead! --JAC Cook

Spotlight on Excellence

Featuring Len Gonzales &
California School for the Deaf

In 1997, Len Gonzales started at CSD as a Teaching Assistant before becoming our Physical Education Teacher. Len eventually was able to shape the Athletic department and bring high standards to the program as our Athletic Director. He was the driving force behind the restructuring of the Physical Education and Athletic department that allowed us to consolidate resources (PE teachers, Athletic Director, new Physical Education Supervisor and an added Youth Athletic Coordinator) and strengthen the program to further benefit our students. For the past three years, he was the High School Administrative Principal before moving to his current role as Director of Instruction.
Dedication to students is the hallmark of CSD staff.
CSD represents at Jr. NAD Conference

T he 2017 Junior National Association of the Deaf national conference in Ashland, Nebraska was a huge success. On November 7 – 12, California School for the Deaf sent Zahra Chauhan, Janeva Mosher, Samantha Medina-Vazquez, and Liliana Ortiz to represent the school at the conference with Daniel Girard and Sheila Korolev as their advisors.
Our students came up with the brilliant name of Unicity which combined the two words: unity and city.

CSD Jr. NAD representatives with the one and only Frank Turk and his wife. Frank Turk has empowered many Deaf youth leaders for decades through his work as the National Director of Jr. NAD, founding the annual summer camp for Deaf students known as Youth Leadership Camp. He continues to be an inspiration to Deaf students, creating new leaders for our Deaf community.
2017-2019 Jr. NAD Ambassador

A Jr. NAD Ambassador is selected through the Jr. NAD Ambassador Program at the Biennial Jr. NAD National Conference. The program offers contestants the opportunity to develop their public speaking skills, learn ways to maximize their abilities, understand the importance of advocacy, and explore their potential as members of Deaf and hard of hearing community.

Deaf Chinese Scholar visits CSD

Dr. Zheng said, “CSD is an amazing school. I appreciate the opportunity! I am grateful to Superintendent Clark Brooke and to my site contact JAC Cook. I was happy to see many early childhood children with excellent signing skills. It was wonderful to see preschool and kindergarten students signing all day in a barrier-free environment. I noticed that many kids sign very fast and are very smart. That impressed me. I am also surprised to see so many Deaf teachers and Deaf principals (eight Deaf principals out of the nine at the school). In the CSD middle school, there were 14 Deaf teachers and two hearing; in China it would typically be the other way around—with two Deaf teachers and 14 hearing. On the last day at CSD, I visited the Open House. While attending the event, I realized that California has a big Deaf Community that is very tightly connected.”

to Puerto Rico Deaf school

Our artist-in-residence, Nancy Rourke, has been involved in a relief effort for one of the schools for the Deaf in Puerto Rico, and she needed someone to travel with her. I was thrilled when she asked me to join her on her trip November 13 – 15.

7 th & 8 th grade Special Needs classes
deliver donations to Santa Rosa fire victims

My class collected clothes for people who lost their homes in Santa Rosa. We separated the clothes by men, women, boys, and girls. My class went in vans and donated the clothes. After we dropped off the donations, we ate lunch, and I had a chocolate Starbucks drink. We finished lunch and drove through the streets where houses had burned down. I was sad. The houses were broken and cars were burned by the fire. — Josie Fisher

Over 79 staff members; students from the Early Childhood Education, Elementary, Middle, & High School departments; as well as PE students from the California School for the Blind participated. The weather cooperated, and CSD groundskeepers had the track well-groomed for the event! Everyone enjoyed 20 minutes of trotting around the track and visiting with friends.

We would like to thank  Linguabee  for their continued support toward CSD’s interpreting needs. CSD is partnering with Linguabee to create solutions that would allow us to coordinate our interpreting needs for the school.  Linguabee have been sending a representative to the school to meet with CSD interpreting team on a frequent basis to collect input and suggestions for the development of their custom scheduling tool for CSD. We are pleased to say that  Linguabee continues to deliver high quality interpreting services to the school and community. Thank you!
