Greetings from the land
of ORANGE and BLACK !

We have arrived at the final edition of CalNews for the 2017-18 academic year. Our next issue will come out in August, which will cover the summer happenings at CSD. With this being said, CSD has had a great year, filled accomplishments by individuals from all parts of our campus, and culminating in the scholarship and graduation ceremonies that celebrated the Class of 2018.

On May 16-17, we were blessed to have Apple back on campus, sharing their ‘Everyone Can Code’ campaign, along with a surprise special guest: Nyle DiMarco , model, actor, and Deaf advocate. There are eight schools participating in this exciting program, including CSD. We appreciate Apple's emphasis on inclusion. For more information (including a list of participating schools), please click and read: Apple brings Everyone Can Code to Schools,,,

Some of us had the opportunity attend Nyle’s presentation at the Steve Jobs Theater, at Apple Park. Nyle did a great job of conveying why and how it is okay to be Deaf. He shared some personal stories and pointed out that it is very important to embrace yourself in order to succeed. Throughout his presentation, he emphasized that American Sign Language and being Deaf are beautiful. Thank you, Nyle!

On the day before Apple’s campaign, we had City of Fremont Mayor Lily Mei with us for couple of hours. The Mayor toured our school and sat down with some of us to discuss ways to continue strengthening our partnership with the City of Fremont. We talked about ways that our students could become more involved with the city, such as volunteering; participation in academic-related expos; and other meaningful opportunities. Mayor Mei was fortunate to observe the planning phase of the Everyone Can Code campaign, which took place the following day.

Recently, our State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson , visited CSD where he got the opportunity to chat with our student leaders. During his visit, our leadership team presented CSD’s Dashboard (information on programs, philosophy, and performance data) to Superintendent Torlakson. Superintendent Torlakson asked some great questions and actively participated in discussions. He also suggested solutions regarding the recruitment and retention of our students. CSD is thankful for the time we had with Superintendent Torlakson, and we look forward to more connections with him before the end of his term.

In this issue, CSD proudly shines some light on the successes of our students. Please join me in recognizing our students, athletes, and graduates for their impact and contributions to the school. Additionally, we want to recognize our staff members who are retiring this year, and the volunteers who gave their time to support our students. We hosted a retirement tea and a volunteer appreciation lunch to honor these important individuals. We appreciate our volunteers for helping to provide opportunities for our students to succeed along their individual paths.

As always, our students continue to excel in and out of the classroom. Our academic departments send out newsletters to share information about their programs, and the successes of our students. If you have not been subscribing to their newsletters, please contact the department principal or supervisor.

It is very important to keep in mind that our students attend CSD primarily to be educated bilingually. Inclusion in our after-school activities, such as our athletic and student life programs, is very important in developing their identity, self-esteem, and the actualization of their ability to succeed as they grow into successful adults.

By sharing this monthly  CalNews  with you, it is evident that there are so many things going on at CSD! Our students, families, staff, and community members are to be recognized for their commitment towards the school’s mission, serving our students to the best of their ability. Together, we continue to create more opportunities for everyone at CSD.

With Eagle Pride,

Clark Brooke, Ed.S.

CSD would like to thank Andy Laufer for his staunch support toward the school’s mission of bilingualism for every student that we serve. With support from the California Department to Education, Andy collaborated with the Schools for the Deaf and CSUN to make the “Through Your Child’s Eyes: American Sign Language” video. Andy served more than 27   years with the California Department of Education.

Seniors, Iliana Cerna, and Maribel Vargas did community service on behalf of CSD.

West Contra Costa Unified School District hosted a picnic and resource fair, on April 28, at Harding Park, in El Cerrito. When they invited CSD students living in West Contra Costa to attend the event, CSD sent Iliana Cerna and Maribel Vargas.

As it turned out, Iliana and Maribel volunteered as panelists sharing their experience being Deaf; what it was like communicating with family members; and about other parts of their life. They proudly shared many positive points about being a CSD student. They talked about how CSD had allowed them to thrive to the fullest, beyond their imagination. They shared about how thankful they were to their parents for communicating with them in ASL and sending them to CSD. They said they would not be where they are today if it were not for CSD.

Not only did Iliana share her experiences on the panel, her mother, who is a Parent Links mentor, was at a booth, during the same event, sharing resources with families of Deaf children.

Deafhood Journey Panel

On May 3, the Early Childhood Education department hosted an event for for ECE families that included a panel of Deaf adults who shared their journey growing up as a Deaf person. The "Deafhood" journey for each person is different. They come from different countries and backgrounds. They have different schooling experiences. One thing they shared in common was the Deaf experience itself. We were very appreciative of them sharing their stories. They were powerful and important. Thanks goes to the panelists: Jane Whitney , Haruna Matsumoto , Yatika Engineer , Elvis Zornoza , Sam Sepah and Rory Osbrink .
