Summer is almost here, and Canmore is a great location close to home for those May and June weekend escapes before the kids are officially out of school and on vacation. Close enough for a day trip but enjoyable for a weekend getaway as well, Canmore offers something fun for every member of the family.

It's refreshing to find a kids' menu that reflects the regular fare at a restaurant, rather than a predictable list of frozen burger patties and chicken fingers. Here are a few that are worth seeking out.

SUMMER IS COMING - ARE YOU READY?

As millions of children across the country head off to day and overnight camps this summer, they'll return home with more than just a cute camp T-shirt. The summer camp experience can give kids an advantage in school and in life. Here's how camp benefits kids.

CHOOSING THE PERFECT CAMP FOR EACH CHILD IN THE FAMILY
Written by Christa Katz; Photo: Fotolia.com

A mistake parents can make when choosing a camp is confusing their child's needs with their own needs. If you want your child to be happy at camp, focus on who they are rather than on who you were as a camper. Your goal is to create a harmonious relationship between each of your children and the camp experience, not for your child to follow in your well-worn hiking boots.

Growing up in South Africa, sleepover camps weren't nearly as popular as they are in North America. I hated the idea of not having a washroom in my cabin and having to make my way to one with only a flashlight to guide me. And I didn't want to sit around campfires listening to ghost stories that I feared would keep me awake at night.

My husband, on the other hand, looked forward to the entire sleeping-away-from-home experience. He loved the independence, the campouts, sharing a cabin with 11 other boys his age, trekking through wild wooded areas and portaging to the river. I think he especially loved the friendships he made and all the activities, such as windsurfing and archery, he might never have been exposed to closer to home.

After our older daughter was grown up enough to choose between day camp and sleepover camp, I had to think really carefully about how I was going to help her make her decision.
