The Case for Halloween

Every October, when the Fall chill really sets in and the first few snowflakes force me to turn on the heater in my car for the first time since April, I start to get excited. The Halloween stores open again, and by halfway through the month, they are packed full of overly-ambitious costume ideas and harried parents wondering why it costs $75 to dress their kid like a witch every year.

I get into the spirit of the season as soon as I can, expanding my collection of multi-colored Jack-o-Lanterns and planning a theme for my front step. Despite the excitement leading up to the season and the crowds filling the stores buying candy and chocolate, one thing seems to be a constant. Every year, without fail, I find myself sitting at the door on the 31st of October wondering where all the kids have gone.

HELP & ADVICE
Make Mealtimes Meaningful
by Dr. Susan Bartell

October is the month that parents sometimes forget to breathe. The novelty of back-to-school has worn off and the challenge of fitting in car pools, homework, activities and your own obligations leaves little time for anything - including breathing!

You might not realize it, but your child likely feels exactly the same way. In particular, once the hectic school year ensues, many kids feel they don't get enough time with their parents. They miss the later bedtimes and slow days at the pool and their free time to read with you or play outside has been replaced with homework.

There are many reasons that eating meals with your kids is important, but for me, spending a slice of your busy days together is one of the most important. Of course, it can be difficult to find the time - especially if you have more than one child whose schedules conflict, or if you work.

Here are four tips to help you find those valuable nuggets of mealtime and capture them.

Preparing for Winter: 10 Tips to Keep Your RV in Good Shape
by Bucars RV Centre; Photo: Courtesy of Bucars RV Centre

Autumn in Calgary is a beautiful season, but it can also be both short and unpredictable. It's also the time of year when most of us put our RV away for the year and declare camping season to be sadly on hiatus. It's important to know how to properly maintain your RV in order to keep it in good shape for when Spring thaw arrives.

We've  put together a Top 10 list of maintenance tips to keep your RV in good shape. Of course, always ensure you've  read your owner's manual for any guidelines that may be unit-specific. These guidelines are just a brief overview of some of  the most important things an RV owner needs to take care of before winter hits.
