(SACRAMENTO, CA, 4/22/14) -- Today, April 22, over 100 members of the California Muslim community are scheduled to meet with their state lawmakers in Sacramento as part of the 3rd-annual "Muslim Day at the Capitol" organized by the California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CA), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization.

Throughout the meetings with their legislators, California Muslims will urge elected officials to act on three critical issues: 

• AB 1976 and AB 330, which are two bills that seek to make college more affordable for incoming students

• the Health for All Act (AB 241), a bill that aims to expand access to health care coverage for all Californians, regardless of immigration status

• the Fourth Amendment Protection Act (SB 828), which would ban state agencies, officials, employees and corporations that provide services to the state from supporting federal government agencies in collecting electronic data from Californians without a federal warrant

"Protecting access to an affordable education, healthcare and the right to privacy is essential to a thriving community," said CAIR-LA's Public Affairs Coordinator Haroon Manjlai. "This event will provide an opportunity for Muslims from the majority of our state's legislative districts to make a measurable impact on state politics by urging lawmakers to support issues that affect not just Muslims but our broader society." 

At previous Muslim Day at the Capitol events, participants advocated for the Workplace Religious Freedom Act (AB 1964), the TRUST Act (AB 4) and the California Bill of Rights for Domestic Workers (AB 241)-all of which were signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown.
