Call for Stories about the
Impact of the Arts
RISCA seeking stories that speak to the value and impact of the arts
on the lives of individuals and communities in our state
The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts is issuing a “call for stories” from Rhode Islanders about how the arts have had an impact on your personal or professional life, or in the life of your community or our state.  We’re particularly interested in stories about how a publicly funded grant, from RISCA or the National Endowment for the Arts, has made a difference in your life or work.

From individuals we’re looking for stories about how a grant has supported or encouraged your work at a critical time, or made something possible that has had a meaningful impact on the lives of others. From organizations we’re looking for stories that help others understand the value and impact of your work. This might be the student whose life was changed by their involvement with the arts, or the senior whose life has been enriched by their participation in the creative process.  As an artist or organization you may have played a role in energizing your community or helping the local economy, or by making Rhode Island a better place to live and work. As a participant, audience member, sponsor, or donor to the arts, you probably have reasons why the arts are an important part of your life. These are the stories we want to share.

It’s RISCA’s 50th anniversary, and we’re gathering 50 stories that highlight the important role the arts play in life in Rhode Island.  We understand that the arts are important to Rhode Island: provide us with the stories that bring this understanding to life. This is particularly important during a time when the arts are under attack at the federal level.

If you have a story, please share it with us by May 1st in the following way:
  • Send an email with your story to Mary-Kim Arnold at mkimarnold@gmail.com Use the subject RISCA Art Stories
  • While there’s no real restriction on the length of your story, please be aware that stories will be edited down to 500 words.  Brevity and focus are important!
  • If you have an image or video you want to share, please attach the digital image to your email or provide a link to an online video in the body of your email.
  • Not every story will be used.  If we do end up using your story you may hear from Mary-Kim, who may edit your work for clarity and context, and may reach out to you with questions.
  • Be aware that your work may be used – with attribution – on RISCA’s website or Facebook page.  We may also share your story with elected officials, who have requested stories that speak to the impact of the arts in Rhode Island. By providing us with your story you give us permission to share it with other.
Thank you for participating in this effort.  We look forward to sharing your story with others!
