This Weekend!

Dear MRTA Members:

GOOD NEWS!  SS#2/SCS/SB 313 was not debated this week in the House!  This was likely because they did not have enough votes for passage.  Thank you to all who have written their State Representative so far.  You have made a difference.  If you have not done so please write your State Representative this weekend opposing SS#2/SCS/SB 313.

MRTA members who live out of state - please write the Speaker of the House, Todd Richardson - Todd.Richardson@house.mo.gov.

Missouri Legislative Session ends on Friday, May 12 at 6:00 p.m..  HB 304 (Divorce "Pop-Up") and HB 305 (Kelly Services Loophole Closure) are in the Senate and are in a good position for passage.  Please stay tuned!  Click here to see our 2017 MRTA Issues of Importance.

As noted before, SS#2/SCS/SB 313 (Koenig R-15) creates a voucher program that will take money away from public schools.  This means fewer teachers hired and smaller raises for existing teachers hence less money into the retirement system.  In addition, a number of amendments have been added which further hurt public education in a number of ways.   Click here for more details.

It is imperative that retirees, public school supporters, Superintendents, school board members, teachers, parents, and patrons contact their local representative to voice strong opposition to this legislation.   WE NEED A MASSIVE RESPONSE FROM MRTA MEMBERS!

The MRTA 2017 Legislative Platform  (click here)  states MRTA opposes vouchers that take scarce state revenue for public schools and puts those dollars into religious and private schools/institutions.  It is estimated to require $25-60 million in state revenue to begin this voucher scheme.  It is estimated the costs will rise each year.

Dear Representative XXX

I am a voter and taxpayer in your district. I am also a retired educator and member of MRTA. I am writing to ask you to oppose SS#2/SCS/SB 313 a voucher type program. Vouchers take much needed and scarce tax revenues away from public education. As a whole, public education is doing a great job for Missouri and needs to be supported. Thank you for your time and attention to this request.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
